Southern Connecticut State Defeats Le Moyne, Merrimack

The Southern Connecticut State University swimming and diving team honored its seniors before the meet against Le Moyne. The Owls defeated Le Moyne 148-81.

The meet began with a senior-filled relay team: Oscar Castillo (Norwalk, Conn.), Jimmy Zummo (Stockholm, N.J.), Kyle Pietro (Huntington Valley, Penn.) and Joseph Polaco (Waterbury, Conn.) taking the 400 yard medley, finishing in 3:39.04.

Castillo also was victorious in the 200 yard IM (2:01.34).

Raymond Cswerko (Torrington, Conn.) touched the wall first in two events on the day.  The junior won the 50 yard freestyle (:21.29) and the 100 yard backstroke (:51.43).

Youth was also served for the Owls on the afternoon.

In the 100 yard butterfly, freshmen swimmers went 1-2 for SCSU.  Dylan Swanepoel (Milford, Conn.) placed first with Raymond Snyder (Waterbury, Conn.) finishing a close second.

Christian Berg (Groton, Conn.) continued his outstanding rookie year, taking the 200 yard freestyle in 1:46.65.  Freshmen Swanepoel and Berg sandwiched sophomore Louis Geist (Arvada, Colo.) in the event placing.

Berg finished second to teammate Brendan Murphy (Watertown, Conn.) in the 100 yard freestyle (:47.92).  Geist touched the wall third.

SCSU swimmers placed in the top three spots in five events on the day.

Daniel Gallup (Milford, Conn.) finished first in the 500 yard freestyle (4:54.01), another event where SCSU took the top two spots. Polaco was the runner-up.

The Owls compete next at the Northeast-10 Conference championships. SCSU will host the meet, which runs from Feb. 6-9.



On a day where the Class of 2014 was honored, the senior members of the Southern Connecticut State University women's swimming and diving team led the way against Le Moyne and Merrimack.  The Owls won 142-75-16.

Anna Pleban (Seymour, Conn.) touched the wall first in two events.  The Owls' co-captain won the 50 yard freestyle (finishing time :24.76) and 100 yard freestyle (:53.93).

Fellow co-captain Hannah Olson (Torrington, Conn.) won the 200 yard freestyle, finishing in 1:59.40.

Senior Elizabeth Hess (Iowa City, Iowa) touched the wall first in 200 IM (2:17.60)  The Owls went 1, 2, 3 in the event, with Courtney Silva (Burnsville, Minn.) placing second and Christina Lavery (West Haven, Conn.) third.

Jessica Renzo (Westfield, Mass.) qualified for nationals on the diving board today.  The junior scored 272.18 points on the 3M board.  Renzo also won the 1M diving event scoring 247.64 points.

Silva won the 100 yard breaststroke (1:10.39), with freshman Molly Soufrine (Branford, Conn.) finishing second.

The Owls also took the top two placings in the 100 yard backstroke.  Rachel Smolensky (Norwalk, Conn.) was victorious (1:01.19) and Christine Katrenya (Oxford, Conn.) touched the wall second.

SCSU will compete next when it hosts the Northeast-10 Conference Championships Feb. 6-9.
