The George Washington women’s swimming team won all but two events en route to a 160.5 - 94.5 victory over crosstown rival Georgetown on Saturday afternoon in the squad’s home finale at the Charles E. Smith Center Pool.
A pair of seniors paved the way for the Colonials in the final home meet of their careers as Caroline Myers won four events and Lindsay Moore tallied three victories. Junior Janica Lee also won three races while rookie Carly Whitmer won two.
The Colonials opened the meet with a 200-yard medley relay victory as Moore, Lee, junior Morgan Zebley and senior Melissa Fernandez touched the wall in 1:50.93. GW then swept the top three spots in the 1,000 free with Myers claiming first in 10:23.91 followed by sophomore Madison Reinker in second in 10:32.87 and Emma Gaquin in third in 10:51.69.
Myers won her second event of the afternoon when she took home first in the 200 free with a time of 1:54.92. Reinker (1:57.01) earned a second-place finish and sophomore Kally Vanderbilt (1:59.41) finished in fourth. Moore finished first in the 100-yard backstroke, clocking in at 1:00.27, and won the 200 back with a time of 2:10.99.
Lee earned top honors in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:07.64 followed by sophomore Mara Debnekoff in second in 1:09.95. The pair mimicked their finishes in the 200 breast as Lee won in 2:26.18 and Debnekoff finished in second in 2:31.41. The rookie duo of Whitmer and Lauren Law finished first and second in the 200-yard butterfly as Whitmer touched the wall in 2:08.17 and Law finished in 2:11.60.
Myers posted her third individual victory in the 500 free, clocking in at 5:05.78, and Reinker (5:14.69), Gaquin (5:22.23) and senior Taylor Cole (5:24.11) followed in second, third and fifth, respectively. Whitmer earned a first-place finish in the 100 fly with a time of 57.98 seconds and Zebley followed in a close second place in 58.22 seconds.
Lee won her third event in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:10.40 and Law took home second place in 2:23.04. The Colonials wrapped their final home meet with a first-place finish in the 400 free relay as Myers, Vanderbilt, Fernandez and Law finished in 3:38.13.
Prior to the meet Cole, Fernandez, Rachael Johnston, Moore, Myers, Remy Neville, Sloan Saunders and Sydney Saunders were honored in a Senior Day ceremony.
GW heads to Atlantic 10 newcomer George Mason on Saturday, Feb. 1 for the Revolutionary Rivalry meet and regular-season finale. Action in Fairfax, Va., is scheduled for 1 p.m.
The George Washington men’s swimming team tallied 17 top-three finishes but it was not enough to overcome Georgetown as the squad was edged, 136-125, in its final home meet of the season.
Junior Goran Koprivnjak paced the Colonials with four victories on the afternoon while classmate Adam Rabe won three events.
Rabe won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 59.24 seconds then won the 200 breast in 2:10.05, followed by freshman Matt McPherson in third in 2:19.12. Rookie Bogdan Balteanu earned a first-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle in 47.95 seconds and sophomore Jordan Sharples won the 200 free in 1:45.84.
Koprivnjak and McPherson took home first and second in the 200-yard butterfly as Koprivnjak won in 1:53.63 and McPherson clocked in at 1:58.24. Koprivnjak won his second event of the day in the 100 fly with a time of 51.46 seconds then earned the top spot the 200-yard individual medley in 1:58.26.
Senior Jake Mortensen won the 200-yard backstroke, touching the wall in 1:55.88, and finished second in the 100 back with a time of 52.81 seconds. The 200-yard medley relay team of Mortensen, Rabe, freshman Ben Fitch and Balteanu finished second with a time of 1:37.39.
Freshman Liam Huffman earned a second-place finish in the 1,000 free in 9:50.50 and senior Spencer Neff followed in third in 9:57.84. Huffman (4:45.46) then finished second in the 500 free and Neff (4:55.41) finished in fourth.
The Buff and Blue closed the meet with a come-from-behind win in the 400 free relay as Huffman, Rabe, Koprivnjak and Balteanu touched the wall in 3:12.04.
Prior to the meet Mortensen and Neff were honored in a Senior Day ceremony.
