Florida Tech Sweeps Rollins

Florida Tech closed out the program’s third regular season by sweeping Rollins for the first time in the program’s three-year history Saturday afternoon at the Panther Aquatic Center.

The men won all 11 of their events and swam exhibition in their final three races enroot to a 122-68 decision. They finish at 6-4 on the season and are the first men’s swimming team to conclude their campaign with a winning record at FIT.

The women were victorious in 10 of their 11 events and swam exhibition in their last two races. They posted a 114-85 win to wrap up the season at 4-8 overall. Their four wins doubled last year’s wins total and are the most in a single-season in the program’s three years.

“We were much more aggressive today,” head coach Jeni Ritter said. “This was our last dual meet of the season and we wanted to end on a positive note. We had a rough day yesterday. I think redemption was on our mind today. We now have one month to prepare for our conference meet, which will be our focus moving forward.”

Schelli Linz, Carmen Montalvo, Bernie Murphy and Lauren Suarez all had a big day in the pool, winning at least two races. Linz, Suarez, Shelby Pearce and Murphy started the meet off with a win in the 400-yard medley relay at 4:10.45. Linz later touched the timing pad first in the last individual event, the 200-yard breaststroke at 2:33.92.

Montalvo came out on top in both of her freestyle events. She claimed the 500-yard freestyle at 5:19.19 and the 1,000-yard freestyle at 10:47.45. Murphy won the 200-yard freestyle at 1:58.23 and the 200-yard freestyle relay at 1:42.50 with Suarez, Kristen Jones and Liana Soileau. Along with registering two victories in relay competition, Suarez grabbed first place in the 100-yard freestyle at 55.19.

Nir Barnea and Takashi Worrell won all three of their races against the Tars. Barnea, Kaikea Nakachi, Brian Dumont and Worrell swam to a first-place finish in the opening men’s race, the 400-yard medley relay, at 3:33.89. Barnea was then the victor in the 50-yard freestyle at 21.35. Later on, in the 200-yard freestyle relay, he teamed with Jonah Rieman, Steven Moodie and Victor Westerlund to win at a mark of 1:26.15.

In addition to helping his team record a win in the 400-yard medley relay, Worrell won his two freestyle events, the 200-yard free at 1:42.98 and the 500-yard free at 4:40.49. Also ending the meet with multiple wins was Dumont, who clocked in at 2:11.53 in the 200-yard breaststroke.
