Florida Tech Falls to St. Leo

Racing in its second to last meet of the regular season, Florida Tech lost at Saint Leo Friday afternoon.
 
The men (5-4), winners of their last three, fell for the first time in 2014 to the 21st-ranked Lions, 158-104. They last dropped a dual meet on Nov. 22 against then No. 8 Tampa. The women (3-8) were overcome by the Lions, 146-104, and Lynn, 132-118.
 
Takashi Worrell, Brian Dumont and Tyler Phelps recorded first-place finishes on the day. Worrell was the first of three consecutive FIT swimmers to score in the 1,000-yard freestyle, winning at a time of 9:44.62. The next closest finisher was teammate Ferruccio Rossi at 10:02.69 and Matt Colvin was third at 10:22.89. Worrell also finished second in the 500-yard freestyle at 4:50.41.
 
Dumont claimed the 100-yard breaststroke at a mark of 59.78. He was second in the 50-yard breaststroke at 27.75 and in the 200-yard medley relay with Kaikea Nakachi, Steven Moodie and Nir Barnea at 1:37.43.
 
Phelps swam in three individual races and a relay. His best showing came in the 100-yard IM, where he won with a time of 55.85. Nakachi also swam in four races, including the 200-yard medley relay. In two of his three individual events, he came in second overall. He clocked in at 25.58 in the 50-yard backstroke and 54.33 in the 100-yard backstroke.
 
Lauren Suarez and Dar Raz captured first-place finishes in their respective events. Suarez won the 50-yard freestyle at 25.52. She also finished third in the 100-yard freestyle at 55.18. In her last event, the 200-yard freestyle relay, she along with Liana Soileau, Kristen Jones and Bernie Murphy timed in less than a half second behind Saint Leo at 1:43.30.
 
Raz, racing in her fifth meet of the season, was the first swimmer to touch the timing pad in the 100-yard backstroke at 1:00.63. She also placed second in the 50-yard backstroke at 28.36.
 
FIT will now return to Melbourne to race for the final time at the Panther Aquatic Center this season. On Saturday at 11 a.m., the Panthers will host Rollins in their regular-season finale. Admission to the meet is free.
