Big Ten Men's Preview

The Donald B. Canham Natatorium on the campus of the University of Michigan will play host to the 2014 Big Ten Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships, which will begin Wednesday, Feb. 26 and conclude Saturday, March 1. Timed finals of the 200-yard medley relay and 800-yard freestyle relays will get underway Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. ET. Competition will then begin at 11 a.m. Thursday through Saturday with preliminary heats, while finals will be held at 6:30 p.m. each night.

Thursday’s schedule features the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley, 50-yard freestyle and one-meter diving event, while the 400-yard medley relay will be contested during the evening finals. Friday’s slate includes the 400-yard individual medley, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard backstroke and three-meter diving competition, with the 200-yard freestyle relay held in the evening. Saturday’s schedule features the 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard butterfly, 1,650-yard freestyle and platform diving event, while the 400-yard freestyle relay will be held during the evening.

Michigan won its third consecutive Big Ten Men’s Swimming & Diving Championship and 37th overall last season. Indiana finished second, followed by No. 3 Ohio State, fourth-place Minnesota, No. 5 Purdue and sixth-place Wisconsin. Iowa finished seventh, followed by No. 8 Penn State. Northwestern and Michigan State placed ninth and 10th, respectively.

The Wolverines return four individual winners looking to defend their titles. Connor Jaeger will seek his third straight title in the 1,650-yard freestyle and second straight crown in the 500-yard freestyle, while teammate Bruno Ortiz will aim to win the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle events for the second year in a row. Michigan’s Anders Nielsen will look to repeat his title in the 200-yard freestyle, while Dylan Bosh aims to duplicate his crown in the 200-yard butterfly.

Indiana’s Cody Miller will look to reclaim his crowns in the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke, while teammate James Wells aims for his third title in the 100-yard backstroke. Returning Hoosiers Darian Schmidt and Conor Murphy won the one-meter and platform diving events, respectively, last season.

Ohio State’s Shane Miszkiel aims for his second title in the three-meter diving competition, while Wisconsin’s Drew teDuits will seek to defend his crown in the 200-yard backstroke.

Michigan controlled last year’s relays, winning the 200-yard and 400-yard medley and the 200-yard, 400-yard and 800-yard freestyle relays.
