Capital Athletic Conference Recaps: Day 2

St. Mary's (Md.) Men

Senior captain Jimmy Forest (Columbia, Md./Atholton) picked up a school record in the 100 backstroke on Saturday as the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's swim team competed on the second day of the 2014 Capital Athletic Conference Men's Swimming Championship.

Forest tallied the new record in the morning preliminary round as he posted a time of 53.00, surpassing the old mark by half a second and registering the third-fastest 100 back time of the morning. In the evening, Forest grabbed a fourth-place finish in 53.29.

The three-day event will wrap up on Sunday, February 23rd with the crowning of the team champion. St. Mary's stayed third in the six-team field with 352 points, just 9.5 points behind second-place York College of Pennsylvania.

Senior captain Thor Petersen (Germantown, Md./Northwest) earned one of the team's second-place finishes of the night as Petersen finished second in the 200 breaststroke in 59.95. Junior Ryan Reis (Darnestown, Md./Quince Orchard) was 12th (1:06.04) followed by senior Ryan Wilson (Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford in 13th (1:07.23).

St. Mary's gained a second-place finish in the 800 freestyle relay in 7:05.70. Earning all-conference honors on the relay were first-year Matt Walchuck (Middletown, Md./Middletown), sophomore Grant Burgess (Fallston, Md./Fallston), sophomore Michael Speer (Springfield, Va./West Springfield), and Petersen.

The Seahawks finished third in the 200 medley relay in 1:38.52 behind the efforts of sophomore Zach Lilley (Myersville, Md./Middletown), Forest, junior Bobby Witkop (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase), and Speer.

Petersen claimed third-place honors in the 400 individual medley in 4:15.60 while sophomore Kian Karimi (Kensington, Md./Walter Johnson) captured the consolation finals in 4:25.42 for a ninth-place finish.

Lilley came in fifth behind Forest in the 100 backstroke in 53.81 while junior Dylan Cope (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral) took eighth in 56.69. First-year Andrew Braker (Olney, Md./Sherwood) was second in the consolation finals for 10th in 56.02.

Witkop took sixth in the 100 butterfly in 53.70 to pace the Seahawks while Burgess placed seventh (54.45). Junior Chris Carpino (Medfield, Mass./Medfield) was 13th (58.12) followed by Braker in 14th (58.60).

Walchuck came in sixth in the 200 freestyle in 1:45.72 while senior Jon Sheldon (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) placed 15th (1:53.66).


St. Mary's (Md.) Women

Sophomore Zoe McIlmail (Frederick, Md./Urbana) broke the 200 freestyle school record as the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's swim team competed on the second day of the 2014 Capital Athletic Conference Women's Swimming Championship on Saturday.

McIlmail set the new 200 freestyle school record of 1:56.95 in the morning preliminary session, breaking the six-year old mark by almost a full second and earning the third-fastest time in the preliminaries. In the evening finals, she finished fifth in 1:57.55.

The three-day event will wrap up on Sunday, February 23rd with the crowning of the team champion. The Seahawks remain second in the six-team field with 364 points and own a 76-point lead over third-place York College of Pennsylvania.

St. Mary's picked up a school record in the 800 freestyle relay, finishing second in 7:56.87 and besting last year's record by 2.19 seconds. Earning all-conference honors on the second-place relay were sophomore Cara Machlin (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson), junior Elaina Kohles (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll), junior captain Brooke Raab (Parkton, Md./Hereford), and McIlmail.

Raab had a successful day in the pool as she posted an NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 400 individual medley. She garnered second team all-conference honors with a second-place finish in 4:34.63. Kohles tallied a sixth-place finish in 4:43.37 while senior captain Erin O'Connor (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) captured the consolation finals in 4:46.82 for a ninth-place finish.

The foursome of junior Hannah Hafey (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley), O'Connor, Machlin, and senior Stefania D'Ambrosio (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) claimed a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay in 1:53.97.

D'Ambrosio had the highest finish in the 100 breaststroke as she placed fifth in 1:09.78 while juniors Eva Shpak (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) and Mikaela Greer (Millersville, Md./Old Mill) took 11th and 12th, respectively.

Machlin paced the Seahawks in the 100 butterfly with a sixth-place finish in 1:00.96 while junior Kelsey Abernathy (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) came in seventh (1:01.82). Greer placed 13th in 1:05.97 followed by sophomore Katie Andersen (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) in 14th (1:06.30).

Hafey notched a seventh-place finish in the 100 backstroke in 1:02.18 while sophomore Karlie Straight (Ocean City, Md./Decatur) finished 12th (1:05.99) and first-year Samantha Liming (Silver Spring, Md./JFK) was 13th (1:06.33).

Senior Hanna Rizkallah (Frederick, Md./Urbana) claimed top honors in the consolation finals of the 200 freestyle, taking ninth in 2:04.11.

Salisbury

The Salisbury University men and women's swimming teams wrapped up day two of the Capital Athletic Conference Swimming Championships with another two school records broken.

Freshman Okan Eyigor added another program record into his resume, this time in the 100-yard butterfly. The record had stood since 1997 for Chris Bembenek with a time of 53.47. Eyigor raced in the preliminary in session three for a time of 52.74. Swimming in the final Saturday night, the freshman erased his earlier record by finishing with a time of 52.34 for a third-place finish.

Senior Chris Franklin raced alongside Eyigor in the 100-yard butterfly, swimming for an eighth-place finish (54.49).

Eyigor also qualified in the 100-yard backstroke, swimming for a fourth-place finish (53.22) in the preliminaries. Racing in the final, the Istanbul, Turkey native finished third with a time of 51.50 for his second bronze for the day.

Sophomore Sean DiFatta would place seventh in the 100-yard backstroke, swimming the event in 55.60.

Freshman Layne Gable competed in the 100-yard butterfly preliminary in session three to swim for a seventh-place qualifier with a time of 1:01.96. In session four during the finals, Gable would finish in eighth (1:02.71).

Freshman Victoria Radcliffe qualified sixth in the 200-yard freestyle preliminary with a time of 1:58.46. In the finals, she moved up two spots for a fourth-place finish, racing to a 1:56.84 time.

Junior Brittany Steele raced for a seventh-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:14.14.

The men would add two fourth-place finishes in the 200-yard medley relay and the 800-yard freestyle relay. In the 200-yard medley relay, Eyigor, Franklin, freshman Travis Maida, and sophomore Jake Blazer finished with a time of 1:40.21. In the 800-yard freestyle relay, senior James Gough, sophomore Will Gough, and freshman Eyigor and Scott Schirmer would post a time of 7:09.07. With that time, the men shatter their eighth record in two days. The previous record was set in 2012 with a time of 7:16.05. 

The women would finish fifth in the 800-yard freestyle relay (8:23.35) behind sophomore Nicki Schult and sophomores Rachel Lisk, Gable and Radcliffe.

The final day kicks off Sunday at 10 a.m. with preliminary events. Following the annual Senior Recognition celebration, the final six events will lead to the crowning of the 2014 championship teams at 6 p.m.
