Tampa Takes SSC Lead

At the mid-way mark of the 2014 Sunshine State Conference Swimming Championships, the University of Tampa women are now in first place as its men are second overall.

The Spartans have accumulated 356 points from their women, leading second-place Florida Southern by 58 points. Other competing teams include Nova Southeastern (256), Florida Tech (163), Saint Leo (149), Rollins (136) and Lynn (106).

Florida Southern's men sit atop the leaderboard with 367 points as UT has 319. The two are followed by Nova Southeastern (290), Florida Tech (166), Saint Leo (122) and Rollins (104).

UT's women began the finals segment with a second-place showing in the 200 Free Relay from Erin Plachy, Emily Grams, Allison Noe and Marisa Barton. They were clocked at 1:35.35.

The Spartan men set a new SSC and school record with a championship in the 200 Free Relay. The winning team of Khalid Aldaboos, Jeremy Parker, Runar Borgen and Jordan Augier won with a record time of 1:20.26.

Heather Glenday earned 17 points for the Spartans in the 500 Free with a second-place effort. Her time was 4:56.89. Alex Hipolito followed up with a 200 IM championship after being clocked at 2:05.16. Erin Plachy was then second in the 50 Free with a time of 23.52.

In the men's 50 Free, Parker and Aldaboos placed third and fourth respectively with times of 20.45 and 20.55.

Tampa's women capped the evening with an SSC title in the 400 Medley Relay. A time of 3:49.20 was achieved by Danielle Bach, Hipolito, Catherine Parker and Plachy.

UT's men also won the title in the 400 Medley Relay as the champions included Karl Burdis, Philip Nordenberg, Borgen and Parker. The winning time was listed at 3:14.33.

Friday's action will begin with the 10 a.m., prelims followed by the finals at 6 p.m. The events will include the 200 Medley Relay, 400 IM, 100 Fly, 200 Free, 100 Breast and 100 Back.

The championship with last through Saturday, with Thursday's events including the 200 Free Relay, 500 Free, 200 IM, 50 Free and 400 Medley Relay. The prelims are slated for 10 a.m., followed by the 6 p.m., finals.

Nova Southeastern

The Nova Southeastern swimming and diving teams have reached the halfway mark of the 2014 Sunshine State Conference Championships Thursday. Both the men's and women's teams fell to third place with two days remaining.
 
The women's team holds 256 points and trail the leader, Tampa, but 100. The men have 290 points and trail Florida Southern by 77 points.
 
Marco Aldabe (Alicante, Spain) earned the Sharks a win in the men's 200-yard IM with a time of 1:48.84. The NCAA B qualifying time was one second away from an automatic qualifying time for the NCAA National Championship. In the women's event, Lauren Chapple (Jr., London, England) finished second with a B standard time of 2:05.23. Chapple was barely edged out of first place by seven hundredth of a second. However, she still owns the conference record in the event.
 
NSU's women began the day by earning a B standard time in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The Sharks' A team of Alexandra Zatylny (Sr., Quebec, Canada), Emma Wahlstrom (Fr., Stockholm, Sweden), Arianna Sunyak (Jr., Naples, Fla.) and Emma Lawrenz (Jr., Minnetonka, Minn.) claimed third place with a time of 1:35.78.
 
The men's team also earned a B standard time with a fourth place showing and a time of 1:21.28 in the event. The Sharks' A team was represented by Magnus Lundgren (Jr., Stockholm, Sweden), Esau Simpson (Sr., St. David's, Grenada), Jim Shelley (Sr., Charlottesville, Va.) and Shane Kleinbeck (Jr., San Antonio, Texas).
 
Jessica Rocheleau (Jr., Jacksonville, Fla.) earned a win in the B final of the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:05.02, a B standard time. Former NCAA National Champion Erin Black's SSC record in the event from 2012 still remains intact. Florian Mehlan (Sr., Moers, Germany) claimed third on the men's side with a time of 4:29.26, four seconds off an automatic trip to nationals. Addison Cates (Jr., Fort Myers, Fla.) also hit a B standard time at 4:35.28. Likewise, no swimmer beat former NCAA National Champion Oskar Nordstrand's conference record.
 
Lawrenz raced again in the 50-yard freestyle and earned another B standard time. She claimed third place at 23.84. On the men's side, both Simpson and Lundgren earned B times of 20.71 and 20.76, respectively.
 
Finally, NSU's women claimed third with a B standard time of 3:54.24 in the 400-yard medley relay. The A squad was comprised of Chapple, Sammy Akoubian(Fr., Run Dacula, Ga.), Lawrenz and Zatylny. The men also claimed third with a B standard time of 3:19.64. That A team was made up of Aldabe, Thomas Aycart (Sr., Miami, Fla.), Lundgren and Simpson.
 
NSU will compete in the finals of day three on Friday at 6 p.m.


Florida Tech

 Florida Tech continued to race well on the second day of the Sunshine State Conference Swimming Championship on Thursday as both the Panther men and women still occupy fourth place.
 
Nova Southeastern entered day two as the leader of the men’s and women’s rankings. Florida Southern overtook the Sharks on the men’s side and Tampa leaped to the top on the women’s side at the Orlando YMCA Aquatic Center.
 
Florida Southern’s men have scored 367 points. Tampa is second at 319. Nova Southeastern dropped to third with 290. FIT is fourth at 166. Saint Leo and Rollins are at 122 and 104, respectively.
 
Tampa’s women have accumulated 356 points. Florida Southern at 298, Nova Southeastern at 256 and FIT at 163 round out the top four. Saint Leo (149), Rollins (136) and Lynn (106) are fifth through seventh, in order.
 
“I am very pleased with the team’s performance so far,” head coach Jeni Ritter said. “We are off to our best start in school history with many more events to swim over the next two days.”
 
In the finals on Thursday, FIT set six program records.
 
Lauren Suarez, Dar Raz, Bernie Murphy and Liana Soileau opened racing for FIT with a fourth-place finish in the ‘A’ Final of the women’s 200-yard freestyle relay at a new program mark of 1:37.49. Florida Southern grabbed first place by 15-hundredths of a second over Tampa at 1:35.20.
 
Nir Barnea, Steven Moodie, Jonah Rieman and Victor Westerlund followed with a fifth-place finish in the same event at a program best 1:22.27. Tampa’s relay team set a new championship meet and an overall conference record at 1:20.26.
   
Carmen Montalvo set a new program record in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:06.28 for 10th place in the ‘B’ Final. The program record was her second in as many days as she improved on her previous program best time in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Florida Southern’s Alli Crenshaw won the 500-yard ‘A’ Final at 4:52.33.
 
Takashi Worrell was the eighth swimmer to touch the pad in the ‘A’ Final of the 500-yard freestyle at 4:38.03. Florida Southern’s Raul Garrastazu edged out his teammate Juan Tolosa for first by 14-hundredths of a second at 4:27.68.
 
Dar Raz built on her strong spring semester racing with a fifth-place finish in the 200-yard IM at 2:06.65. Tampa’s Alexandra Hipolito placed first at 2:05.16.
 
In the 50-yard freestyle, Suarez nabbed eighth in the ‘A’ Final at 24.50. Florida Southern’s Kelsey Gouge was first at a new championship meet record of 23.05, which was 27-hundredths faster than the previous time set one year ago.
 
Barnea set a new program mark in the 50-yard freestyle ‘B’ Final at 20.60. His time was the second-fastest in the final. Saint Leo’s Matheus Assis also improved on last year’s championship and overall conference record previously held by him with a mark of 19.95.
 
Suarez, Schelli Linz, Soileau and Bernie Murphy came in seventh in the ‘A’ Final of the 400-yard medley relay at a new program time of 4:02.57. Tampa won the event at 3:49.20.
 
Kaikea Nakachi, Brian Dumont, Worrell and Barnea closed out the day’s racing with a fourth-place finish in the event’s ‘A’ Final at a program mark of 3:28.39. Tampa came out on top at a new championship record time of 3:14.33.
