UMBC sophomore Corinna Darelius (Rye, N.Y./Rye) completed her sweep of the diving events and freshman Emily Escobedo (New Rochelle, N.Y./Maria Regina) broke a school record for the second time in two days as the Retriever women's swimming and diving team competed on the second day of the 2014 America East Swimming and Diving Championships, Saturday at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
After day two, New Hampshire continues to lead with 576 points while UMBC sits second with 491 points. Vermont (458 pts.), Binghamton (327 pts.), and Maine (321 pts.) complete the standings.
Darelius, who captured the 1-meter event last night, led the field in the morning qualifying session of the 3-meter board with a score of 234.95. She then collected her second gold medal in as many days by scoring 261.70 in the event finals.
After snapping the school mark in the 200-yd. IM last night, Escobedo captured the UMBC record for the 100-yd. breaststroke during the morning prelims with a time 1:02.22. At night, Escobedo outdid herself to win her first career individual gold medal with an NCAA "B" cut time and pool record of 1:01.58. Senior Talor Tadena(Orangevale, Calif./Bella Vista) won a bronze medal in the event (1:03.24) and junior Lexi Coon (Camden, Del./Milford) placed fifth (1:04.55).
Earlier in the night, Tadena garnered a silver medal in the 100-yd. butterfly by touching the wall at 56.11. Freshman Hannah Sutherland (Kingston, Ontario/Holy Cross Secondary) also competed in the event finals, placing fifth (56.84).
In the first event of the night-time finals sessions, the UMBC squad of senior Klara Pavelkova (Prague, Czech Republic, Gymnasium Pripotocni), Escobedo, Tadena, and senior Erika Ronning (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township) slipped past the field for the gold medal and the UMBC school record. The quartet combined for a time of 1:42.68 to clip the previous mark of 1:42.70 set last year.
In the final individual swimming event of the night, Pavelkova captured the gold medal in the 100 back for the third straight year. The senior outdid the field by touching the wall at 55.65 while Sutherland won a bronze with a time of 57.35, to jump to seventh in the UMBC record book. Freshman Lauren Day (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) tied for seventh in the event finals with a time of 57.84.
In the 400 IM, freshman Kayla Lilly (Natick, Mass./Medfield) led a trio of Retrievers in the finals, placing third. Lilly touched in at 4:28.19, the seventh-fastest time in UMBC history, while senior Patty Hallberg (Severna Park, Md./Broadneck) placed fifth (4:31.05), and sophomore Carly Deeter (Langhorne, Pa./Pennington School) finished eighth (4:36.93).
Sophomore Kristie Langford (Port Hope, Ontario/CDCI West) led the Retrievers in the 200-yd. free by placing fourth (1:52.34).
In the final event of the night, the 800 free relay, sophomores Catherine Frediani (Ellicott City, Md./Howard), Stephanie Romano (Arlington, Va./Yorktown/Towson),Courtney Hadden (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Forks), and Langford gained a bronze medal for UMBC.
The Retrievers continue the three-day competition on Sunday morning starting with the prelims for 200-yd. back.
