Washington College Splits With McDaniel

The Washington College men's swim team posted its school-record ninth dual-meet win of the season and its school-record ninth consecutive dual-meet win with a 61-34 victory over host McDaniel College in a Centennial Conference meet today in Westminster, Md. The Shoremen conclude the dual meet season with a 9-1 overall and a 5-1 Centennial Conference mark, while the Green Terror finish at 1-9 and 0-6.

Elliott's winning time of 1:47.92 in the 200 freestyle made him the Shoremen's seventh-fastest swimmer ever in that event. He captured the 200 backstroke in 2:01.28. Longenecker won the 50 freestyle in 22.52 and the 100 butterfly in 52.62.

Freshman Brent Hochstein (Townsend, Del./Salesianum School), sophomoreEric Burcin (Bethlehem, Pa./Lebanon Valley), and sophomore DJ Bradshaw(Reisterstown, Md./Calvert Hall) each won one individual event. Hochstein claimed the 200 individual medley in 1:59.55, Bradshaw won the 100 freestyle in 50.24, and Burcin took first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:01.96.

The Shoremen opened the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay as sophomore Charles Logan (Durham, N.C./Riverside), Burcin, junior Greg Lee(Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial), and junior Austin Yocum (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) finished in a time of 1:41.07. Washington also posted the fastest time in the 200 freestyle relay, the final event of the meet, but swam it as an exhibition only. Lee, Yocum, Bradshaw, and Longenecker finished that arc in 1:03.71.

Sophomore Lucas Morgan (Allendale, N.J../Northern Highlands Regional) claimed a pair of second-place finishes in the 1000 freestyle in 10:25.58 and in the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.64, respectively. Washington's previous record of eight dual-meet wins in a season had been achieved six times, most recently 13 years ago, while its record of eight straight wins was set during the 1994-95 season. The Shoremen's one loss this season, a season-opening defeat at Gettysburg, also represents the fewest losses in a season in team history, while their five Centennial Conference wins are a program-high. The Shoremen's .900 head-to-head winning percentage is the best by any Washington College varsity team since the women's swim team went 12-1 (.923) during the 2007-08 season and the best by any Washington College men's varsity team since the men's tennis team finished 19-2 (.905) in 2001.

The Shoremen will compete at the Centennial Conference Championships February 21st-23rd at Franklin & Marshall College.
