Bowling Green Tops Marshall

The Bowling Green swimming team extended its dual meet winning streak to four with a dominant 164-94 victory over Marshall Saturday afternoon on the Thundering Herd’s Senior Day. The winning streak is the longest for the program in 12 years.

After winning their last three meets by an average of 10.3 points and having each of those contests come down to the final race, Saturday’s victory was a welcome escape. The Falcons won early and often, posting nine wins in the 14 races, including sweeping the top two spots in both contested relays. This came despite the fact that head coach Petra Martin shook up the lineup in many of the races.

Maya Skorupski was the lone double winner, picking up her third victory of the year in the 100 backstroke and adding the top finish in the 200 backstroke as well. Hannah Newman won the 200 freestyle and Kristin Filby was a victor in the 100 breaststroke. Victoria Griffin won the 50 freestyle and Brittany Szekely won the 100 freestyle, while Carmen Young ended first in the 200 breaststroke.

Skorupski was also part of the winning 200 medley relay team to play a role in three victories, while Szekely raced on both winning relays (the 200 freestyle relay as well) to add to her individual race win.

While the Falcons were strong at the top of the lineup in most races, Bowling Green also used its depth. The team swept the top three spots in three different races and finished in first and second in three more. The Falcons took at least two of the top three spots in 10 of the 14 races.

Marshall falls to 2-7 with the defeat, while Bowling Green improves to 5-3. The Falcons will conclude the dual meet schedule Saturday with a home meet against Youngstown State at 1 pm. The contest will serve as Senior Day, recognizing the accomplishments of Joelle Scheps, Szekely and Waller.
