Ball State Swept By Buffalo

The Ball State women’s swimming and diving team dropped a 165-135 contest to Buffalo at Lewellen Aquatics Center on Saturday afternoon on senior day. Seniors Haley Richter, Bridgette Ruehl and Stacey Wierman earned individual wins on the day along with freshman Katie Horn.

The meet started off with the 200 medley relay of Mallory Miles, Bridgette Ruehl, Haley Richter and Carlena Magley finishing second in a close race with a time of 1:45.98.

The Cardinals finished 2-3-4 in the 1000 free led by Kayla Hussey who turned in a season-best 10:48.94. Cheyanne Jackson touched next with a 10:50.71 followed by Leighann Mattson with an 11:01.48.

Emily Wisolek turned in a second place time for Ball State in the 200 free with a 1:56.67 followed by Jordan VanWinkle with a 1:56.96 for fourth place. Elaine Pitsas finished with a time of 2:02.06.

Ball State would get its first win of the meet from Haley Richter in the 100 back with a 58.16. Larah Beaver would follow with a season-best time of 58.56 while Allie Kolz turned in a 1:02.54.

Bridgette Ruehl continued the win streak for Ball State with a 1:05.25 in the 100 breast. Stacey Wierman finished second with a 1:07.07 while Sumaiyah Ahmad touched at 1:09.41.

Freshman Katie Horn was the third victory for the Cardinals out-touching teammate Mallory Miles with a 2:09.19. Miles would touch at 2:09.63 while Kayla Hussey finished at 2:19.33.

Carlena Magley finished second in the 50 free with a 24.48 while Audrey Rodawig and Jessica Extine touched at 24.88 and 25.09. The score was close going into the first diving event with Ball State up 66-65.

In the 3-meter diving competition all three divers finished with season-bests led by Madie Zirzow who earned second place with a 279.38. Quinn Bixler finished third with a 250.80 while Brittany Penn followed in fourth with a 240.53.

Coming out of the diving break, Carlena Magley finished second in the 100 free with a 53.32. Jordan VanWinkle and Jessica Extine touched at 54.57 and 55.66.

Larah Beaver finished second in the 200 back with a season-best time of 2:09.08 followed by Mallory Miles with a 2:09.80 for third. Allie Kolz finished with a 2:12.61 while Kimberly Scott and Genevieve Hayes turned in times of 2:14.59 and 2:17.63 in exhibition.

In the 200 breast Stacey Wierman her first win of the season with a season-best 2:22.18 edging out Bridgette Ruehl with a 2:22.24. Sumaiyah Ahmad finished with a 2:30.69.

Emily Wisolek led the way in the 500 free with a third place time of 5:09.50 followed by Cheyanne Jackson and Jordan VanWinkle with times of 5:14.99 and 5:17.22.

Haley Richter earned her second event win of the day in the 100 fly with a season-best time of 55.75. Mallory Miles finished third with a 58.74 while Katie Horn earned fifth with a 58.82. Heading into the final diving event Buffalo was in the lead 125-120.

Madie Zirzow finished second in the 1-meter diving with a scores of 241.65. Quinn Bixler finished in fourth with a 229.35 while Brittany Penn earned a 219.90.

In the 200 IM, Stacey Wierman was the top Cardinals finisher with a season-best time of 2:12.21. Kimberly Scott and Allie Kolz ended with times of 2:15.46 and 2:17.97 respectively. Jackie Iglesias, Sumaiyah Ahmad and Jessica Extine swam as exhibition swimmers in the event and finished with times of 2:17.18, 2:20.32 and 2:23.02.

The 400 free relay of Carlena Magley, Jordan VanWinkle, Audrey Rodawig and Haley Richter finished second with a time of 3:31.08.

Congratulations to seniors Sumaiyah Ahmad, Jackie Iglesias, Cheyanne Jackson, Mallory Miles, Haley Richter, Bridgette Ruehl, Stacey Wierman and Emily Wisolek on the years on dedication to the Ball State women’s swimming and diving program.

The team will travel to Columbus, Ohio to compete in its last regular season event of the year at the Ohio State Winter Invitational Saturday, Feb. 8 and Sunday, Feb. 9. 



The Ball State men’s swimming and diving teams dropped a 178-103 decision to the Buffalo Bulls Saturday afternoon at Lewellen Aquatic Center. Drew Tharp earned an individual win for the Cardinals while Jake Brehmer was able to score the second-best 3-meter score in school history.

Brehmer earned a lifetime-best score of 356.18 on the 3-meter which puts him second all-time in Ball State men’s diving history. His score puts him ahead of Dave Garrow who earned a score of 352.80 in the 1997 season. Brehmer only trails Dave Keener in the record books. Keener’s school record of 357.075 was accomplished during the 1993 season. Brehmer would finish second in the 1-meter with a score of 298.50.

The 200 medley relay of Tucker Hale, Conner Snare, Drew Tharp and Cole Smith turned in a third place time of 1:39.48.

In the 1000 free JD Middleton turned in a season-best time of 10:19.01 while Andrew Lamb finished in 10:24.64. Michael Oaks finished third in the 200 free with a 1:47.12 while Neal Fennig and Jacob Eckert turned in a 1:54.40. In the 100 back, Tucker Hale finished with a 56.58 for fourth place. Logan Kisinger and Cam Watters turned in times of 57.33 and 59.03. Conner Snare clocked a season-best time of 1:03.76 in the 100 breast while Mitch Prather touched at 1:07.85.

Ball State earned its first win of the meet when Drew Tharp turned in a season-best time of 1:53.36 in the 200 fly. Tanner Barton came in third with a time of 1:55.75 while Bradley Ridge turned in a 2:07.77.

In the 50 free, Austin Green came in second place with a 24.48 while Cole Smith and Michael Oaks turned times of 24.88 and 25.09, respectively. The 100 free saw Austin Green, Michael Oaks and Neal Fennig finish third through fifth with times of 48.30, 48.72 and 49.12.

In the 200 back Tucker Hale was the top finisher for Ball State with a 2:02.27. Andrew Lamb and Cameron Watters clocked times of 2:03.04 and 2:07.89. Conner Snare finished second in the 200 breast with a 2:18.88 while Mitch Prather turned in a 2:30.23.

Drew Tharp earned fourth place in the 500 free with a 4:46.22, his first time swimming the event this season. JD Middleton clocked a 4:57.59. In the 100 fly, Tanner Barton came in second place with a 52.21. Cole Smith and Bradley Ridge finished with times of 55.52 and 56.12. In the 200 IM, Tanner Barton finished with a 2:03.45 while Conner Snare earned a season-best time of 2:04.11. Jacob Eckert earned a time of 2:06.67.

The men are back in action next Saturday, Feb. 8 when they host Miami for a 2 p.m. dual meet. The event will also serve as senior night.
