Texas Sweeps Big 12 Swimmer of the Week Honors

The Big 12 Conference announced Wednesday the selection of Texas freshman Joseph Schooling as its Men’s Swimmer of the Week.

One of three Longhorns to post No. 1 national times at the Texas Invitational (Dec. 4-6), Schooling broke the school and Big 12 records in the 200-yard butterfly with his winning mark of 1 minute, 41 seconds, the nation’s fastest time in the event.  The native of Singapore also posted a No. 1 national time in the 100 butterfly (45.59) at the Texas Invitational.

Schooling added the nation’s 11th-fastest time in the 200 IM (1:44.28) and helped the Longhorns’ 200 freestyle relay to the nation’s top time with an NCAA automatic-qualifying mark of 1:16.72.

The Big 12 Conference announced Wednesday the selection of Texas senior Gretchen Jaques as its Women’s Swimmer of the Week.  This marks the Californian’s third such honor as a Longhorn.

Earlier this month at the Texas Invitational, Jaques joined former NCAA champion Laura Sogar as the only Longhorns ever to break 59 seconds in the 100-yard breaststroke.  She posted the nation’s No. 2 time in the event on her way to victory in 58.78 seconds, good for an NCAA automatic-qualifying cut and the No. 3 time in school history.  Jaques is one of only three swimmers nationally to post an NCAA “A” cut in that event this season.

Jaques went on to win the 200 breaststroke at the Texas Invitational in 2:08.60, the nation’s fifth-fastest time.  She also helped Texas earn NCAA automatic-qualifying marks in four relays and led the Horns to a No. 5 national time in the 400 free relay (3:15.54).
