Yellow Jacket Invite Recaps - Day 2

Junior Lucas Morgan (Allendale, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) won a pair of individual events, finished second in another, and broke two school records as the Washington College men's swim team finished third of nine teams at the Yellow Jacket Invitational, held yesterday and today, in Richmond, Va. As a team, the Shoremen piled up 15 total medals at the meet.

Morgan won gold in the 400 individual medley in a Washington College season-best time of 4:13.23 and in the 200 breaststroke in a WC season-best 2:10.85. He took silver in the 1650 freestyle in 16:39.06, breaking his own school records in both the 1650 and 1000 freestyle (10:03.78) in the process. He also swam an exhibition time of 4:50.45 in the 500 freestyle, bettering his own status as the Shoremen's fifth-fastest swimmer ever in that event.

Sophomore Pat Elliott (Media, Pa./Salesianum School [Del.]) won gold in the 500 freestyle in a WC season-best 4:46.89. He was fifth in the 100 backstroke in a WC season-best 53.90, seventh in the 200 backstroke in a WC season-best 2:00.26, and led off the 800 freestyle relay with a 1:46.95 200 freestyle to become the Shoremen's sixth-fastest swimmer ever in that event.

Freshman Kevin Mackenzie (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's College H.S. [D.C.]) won silver in the 100 breaststroke in a WC season-best 59.36, becoming the Shoremen's third-fastest swimmer in that event. He was fourth in the 200 breaststroke in 2:16.29 and fifth in the 50 freestyle in 21.70 to become the Shoremen's fifth-fastest swimmer ever in that event. He led off the 400 freestyle relay with a 46.92 100 freestyle to become the Shoremen's second-fastest swimmer in that event.

Senior Austin Yocum (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) won silver in the 200 freestyle in a WC season-best 1:46.52. He was also 14th in the 500 freestyle in 4:57.99 and in the 100 freestyle in 49.11. 

Senior Greg Lee (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) and junior Brent Longenecker (Maytown, Pa./Donegal) tied for the silver medal the 100 butterfly as they both posted a WC season-best time of 52.42. Lee was also ninth in the 200 butterfly in 2:01.81 and 10th in the 200 individual medley in 2:02.15. Longenecker was ninth in the 100 freestyle in 48.77 and 10th in the 50 freestyle in 22.28.

Sophomore Brent Hochstein (Towsend, Del./Salesianum School) picked up the Shoremen's other two individual medals, taking bronze in the 400 individual medley in 4:14.83 and in the 200 butterfly in a WC season-best 1:58.44. He was also fourth in the 200 individual medley in a WC season-best 1:59.99.

The Shoremen also medaled in all five relay events. Elliott, Longenecker, Morgan, and Yocum won silver in the 800 freestyle relay in 7:08.36. Elliott, Mackenzie, Lee, and Yocum won silver in the 400 medley relay in 3:33.47. Junior Charles Logan (Durham, N.C./Riverside), Mackenzie, Lee, and junior DJ Bradshaw (Reisterstown, Md./Calvert Hall) won bronze in the 200 medley relay in 1:37.14. Yocum, Mackenzie, freshman Cody Weiler (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown Area), Longenecker took bronze in the 200 freestyle relay in a WC season-best 1:27.68. Mackenzie, Weiler, Longenecker, and Yocum won bronze in a WC season-best 3:12.49.

Weiler added an eighth-place finish in the 200 backstroke in 2:00.43 to become the Shoremen's eighth-fastest swimmer ever in that event. He added another eighth-place finish in the 50 freestyle in 22.08 and took ninth in the 100 backstroke in 55.22.

Logan placed 10th in the 100 backstroke in 55.66 and in the 200 backstroke in 2:02.39. Bradshaw was 10th in the 200 freestyle in 1:49.48, while sophomoreJason Mercando (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) was 12th in the 200 freestyle in 1:49.75 and tied for 15th in the 50 freestyle in 22.67.

A pair of the Shoremen's "B" relay entries placed fifth. Elliott, Morgan, Longenecker, and Weiler were fifth in the 200 medley relay in 1:38.29, while Lee, Bradshaw, Mercando, and Hochstein were fifth in the 800 freestyle relay in 7:18.04.

Washington and Lee won the Yellow Jacket Invitational with 767 points. Host Randolph-Macon narrowly edged out the Shoremen for second, finishing with 645 points to the Shoremen's 643. Catholic was a distant fourth with 366 points.

The Shoremen return to action January 16th with a 5:30 p.m. home non-conference meet against Widener.

 

Sophomore Ellen Maxwell (Towson, Md./Loch Raven) won gold in the 1650 freestyle as the Washington College women's swim team finished third of 10 teams at the Yellow Jacket Invitational, held yesterday and today in Richmond, Va. The Shorewomen won a total of four medals at the meet.

Maxwell's winning time in the 1650 freestyle in 18:17.08, bettering her own status as the Shorewomen's sixth-fastest swimmer ever in the event. She was also fourth in the 500 freestyle in a Washington College season-best 5:19.16, becoming the Shorewomen's ninth-fastest swimmer ever in that event, and fifth in the 400 individual medley in a WC season-best 4:46.34.

Freshman Jennifer Clune (Bowie, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) won a bronze medal in the 100 freestyle in a WC season-best 54.38 to become the Shorewomen's fifth-fastest swimmer ever in that event. She was also fourth in the 100 breaststroke in a WC season-best 1:08.88 to become the Shorewomen's sixth-fastest swimmer ever in that event and placed ninth in the 50 freestyle in 25.66.

Freshman Katie Gorman (Whippany, N.J./Whippany Park) won a bronze medal in the 50 freestyle in a WC season-best 25.06 to become the Shorewomen's fifth-fastest swimmer ever in that event. She also placed eighth in the 100 freestyle in 54.95 to become Washington's ninth-fastest swimmer ever in that event.

The 800 freestyle relay team of Maxwell, senior Alicia Howard (Wilmington, Del./Charter School of Wilmington), Clune, and freshman Mackenzie Gaze (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) picked up a bronze medal in 8:06.05. 

Sophomore Megan Obarowski (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) placed fifth in the 200 butterfly in a WC season-best 2:18.34. She was also seventh in the 200 individual medley in 2:17.93 and in the 400 individual medley in 4:53.90. 

Freshman Tricia Liller (Alexandria, Va./Annandale) placed sixth in the 200 breaststroke in a WC season-best 2:34.96, seventh in the 100 breaststroke in 1:12.04, and 15th in the 200 individual medley in 2:23.77. Freshman Allie Grillo (Mt. Airy, Md./The Learning Community) finished sixth in the 1650 freestyle in 19:02.40, ninth in the 400 individual medley in 4:58.27, and 16th in the 500 freestyle in 5:32.09.

Senior Ashley Maurizi (Reamstown, Pa./Cocalico) turned in a seventh-place finish in the 1650 freestyle in 19:12.11 and was 14th in the 500 freestyle in 5:30.53. Freshman Joelle Williamson (Conestoga, Pa./Penn Manor) finished eighth in the 100 backstroke in 1:01.42 and 10th in the 200 backstroke in a WC season-best 2:15.79. Junior Julianna Fritzinger (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion Area) added an eighth-place finish in the 1650 freestyle in 19:14.54, was 11th in the 400 individual medley in 4:59.91, and placed 11th in the 200 breaststroke in 2:39.30. 

Gaze placed ninth in the 500 freestyle in 5:25.45, 10th in the 200 freestyle in 2:01.87, and 15th in the 100 freestyle in 56.14. Howard was 10th in the 500 freestyle in 5:27.32 and 16th in the 200 backstroke in 2:18.14. Freshman Emelie Farrington (Neptune, N.J./Monmouth County Academy) contributed a 14th-place finish in the 200 butterfly in 2:30.52. 

Two Shorewomen relays turned in fifth-place finishes. Maxwell, Gorman, Gaze, and Clune were fifth in the 400 freestyle relay in a WC season-best 3:44.30, while Williamson, Liller, Gorman, and Clune were fifth in the 400 medley relay in 4:14.81. 

Washington and Lee won the Yellow Jacket Invitational with 1,126 points. St. Mary's College of Maryland was a distant second with 534. The Shorewomen had 493 points, while fourth-place Catholic had 459.

The Shorewomen return to action January 16th with a 5:30 p.m. home non-conference meet against Widener.
