Miami (OH) Invite Recaps - Day 2

Miami University's men's swimming and diving returned to the Nixon Aquatic Center for day two of the 21st Annual Miami Invitational on, Friday, Dec. 5.  

The diving squad was in action today when juniors Cole Fryman and Michael Nash made impressive second- and third-place finish in the 1M diving finals. Sophomore Sean Sargent's dives earned him fifth place. This is their first competition since the RedHawks competed against Cleveland State on Nov. 1.

The RedHawks had a strong showing in the 100-yard backstroke. Junior Heshan Unamboowe clocked a time of 50.65, earning him fourth place. Unamboowe was just in front of junior Sean Neri in fifth with a time of 51.02 and junior Davis Staley in seventh.

In the 200-yard freestyle, junior Christopher Dieter took eighth place when he clocked a time of 1:40.56. Senior Joe Baumgartner finished in 19th with sophomores Lucas Brock close behind in 21st and sophomore Jack Strauss in 22nd.

Freshman Peter Simcox earned points for the team in the 100-yard fly finals. Simcox finished 17th in this event, touching the wall at 51.66. Sophomore Grant Stafford finished 25th in the same event.

Another impressive freshman finish was made by Ross Rybakowicz who finished 13th in the 400-yard IM finals, clocking a time of 4:07.69. Rybakowicz was followed by senior Andrew Kilkenny in 19th, senior Sam Crockett in 22nd, and sophomore Bryan McNamara in 23rd.

Junior Evan Bader swam to a 10th-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke finishing with a time of 56.95. Freshman Hutch Blackstone earned points when he finished 18th in the same event. Crocket was just behind him in 21st.

In the final event of the night, Strauss, Westrick, Baumgartner and Dieter came together to swim the 800-yard freestyle relay. The relay team finished seventh with a final time of 6:53.26.

Day two wrapped up with Denison in first with 1478.5 points, Cincinnati in second with 1358.5 points, followed by Wright State with 1078 points, Emory with 972 points, Miami in fifth with 853 points and Urbana in sixth with 241 points.

 

Miami University’s women’s swim and dive team leads after day two of the Miami Invitational after a stellar 400-yard IM, in which five swimmers placed in the top nine, including the first and second place finishers. The event earned the RedHawks a total of 140 team points.

The RedHawks are leading the pack with a team score of 1682. Emory is second with 1011 points, Cincinnati is third (1004), Toledo is fourth (972) and Denison (962.5), Wright State (528.5) and Urbana (117) round out the team rankings, respectively.

Junior Aubrey Kluth won the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:21.21, earning the RedHawks 36 points. Freshman Holly Schuster was the second-place finisher in the event, clocking in at 4:22.23. 

Senior Stephanie Pearce (4:25.53), junior Shannon Ahearn (4:28.32) and freshman Shay Spelman (4:29.24) rounded out the championship heat in fifth, eighth and ninth place, respectively.

Sophomore Stephanie LeMire swam the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:02.41, earning third place. Sophomore Elise Campbell (1:03.30) and freshman Holly Schuster (1:05.34) finished in fourth and eighth place, respectively. The trio earned 81 team points for Miami.

The 200-yard medley relay team of sophomore Brittany Dudzinski, Lemire, junior Gabrielle Veri and senior Annie Marquiss ended up tying Emory for first place, with both teams clocking in at 1:42.78. This earned the RedHawks and the Eagles each 66 points. 

Freshman Katherine Kuhl, Schuster, junior Stephanie Nemeth and junior Natalie Rohr swam fast enough for sixth place (1:44.28), earning Miami 52 points.

Sophomore Julia Campbell, Pearce, Spelman and LeMire placed fifth in the 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 7:31.44. A sixth-place finish was earned by Elise Campbell, junior Sara Krueger, senior Caitlin Fujan and senior Whitney Mitchell by clocking in at 7:34.07. The two relay teams earned 106 points for the RedHawks.

The 100-yard backstroke consisted of Kuhl (56.16), Dudzinski (56.46) and junior Emma Szczupakiewicz (57.35) earning fifth, sixth and ninth place, respectively.

Nemeth (56.63), Veri (56.39) and sophomore Kathleen Dodson (57.72) finished the 100-yard butterfly in seventh, eighth and ninth place, respectively.

Sophomore Elise Campbell earned 27 points for the RedHawks by touching the wall in 1:51.62, fast enough for fifth-place in the 200-yard freestyle.

As for diving, sophomore Taylor LeCount placed fourth in the three-meter dive with a score of 244.60.

The Miami Invitational continues Saturday morning, Dec. 6, at 10 a.m. with the preliminaries. The finals will then occur Saturday night starting at 6 p.m.
