Eastern Michigan Invite Recaps - Day 1

Bowling Green State

After day one of competition, the Bowling Green State University swimming and diving team sit in third place at the Eastern Michigan University Invitational. EMU, Ball State, Oakland, Olivet Nazarene and Wayne State are all competing at the meet.
 
EMU leads the field with 305 points, followed by Oakland with 290 and BGSU with 265.
 
"We had a pretty strong day," Head Coach Petra Martin said. "A lot of our people were faster than at Georgia Tech, which is great to see. Both Carrillo (200 breast) and Davis (200 back) hit NCAA B cuts this evening."
 
BG did not enter any divers into the 3-meter competition earlier this morning.
 
Freshman Natalie Criswell placed fourth in the 1650 freestyle, shaving almost 13 seconds off of her previous best time. Tara Capouch finished sixth and Alex Poitinger eighth overall in their first 1650 free races of the season. Hannah Albionalso scored points for BG, finishing in 10th with a 17:41.07.
 
The Falcons finished 1-3-4 in the 200 backstroke, accumulating 51 points. Estela Davis broke the EMU pool record, swimming a first place, NCAA B cut qualifying time of 1:57.80. This is also a season personal best time for Davis. Maria Galic and Maya Skorupski both set season personal bests, finishing just over a second apart.
 
Kayla Effinger led BG in the 100 freestyle with a 51.93 season PR, which was good for seventh place overall. Victoria Griffin (8), Hannah Newman (10) and Anna Babinec (16) also scored for the Falcons.
 
Swimming another NCAA B cut qualifying time, Daniela Carrillo finished first in the 200 breaststroke with a season best time of 2:14.27. Kristin Filby placed second and Carmen Young in seventh, both swimming season personal bests.
 
Jordan Bullock notched a second place finish for the Falcons, swimming a season best 2:02.85 in the 200 butterfly. Nicole Hranchook finished 10th, recording a season best time of 2:07.41 and Albion swam a 2:12.24 (15th place).
 
In the final event of the night, the 400 freestyle relay team of Griffin, Effinger, Davis and Newman placed first overall. The group set a new season personal best of 3:24.96.
 
"We are definitely learning a lot about how we want to do things here in February and what we need to adjust as far as logistics and other items of our team meet operations," Martin said. "We are looking forward to tomorrow and seeing how we respond to a quick event turn around."
