Texas Sophomore Bromberg Wins Third Straight U.S. Platform Title

UT sophomore Murphy Bromberg captured her third consecutive U.S. senior-level national title in the women’s platform event at the 2014 AT&T National Diving Championships on Saturday.  UT sophomore Mark Anderson also added a win alongside Toby Stanley in the men’s platform synchro finals.

Bromberg narrowly trailed Indiana’s Amy Cozad after the first of five rounds in the women’s platform final before opening a huge lead round-by-round en route to an easy win.  The All-American took the lead for good with her meet-best three-and-a-half somersault for 89.1 points in round two.  Bromberg repeated as the U.S. summer national champion with her final tally of 368.15 points, which surpassed her nearest competitor, Annika Lenz of UCLA, by over 55 points.

Bromberg’s win is her fourth consecutive victory on platform at a major U.S. national diving event.  The Bexley, Ohio, native won platform at last summer’s U.S. junior national meet before winning her first senior-level platform title at this same meet a year ago.  Bromberg added a platform win last December at the USA Diving Winter Nationals in Austin.

“I’m happy with my performance, although I wish that last dive would have been a little better,” Bromberg told USA Diving.  “That’s my struggle dive right now. Other than that, I thought my other dives were pretty good.”

Anderson teamed up with Toby Stanley to win the four-team platform synchro title with 383.40 points.  Anderson earned All-America honors on platform last season as a true freshman.

“I’m really happy with how we dove,” Anderson said.  “We improved our score by 20 points from the prelims to win our first national title. We knew we could do it. We just needed to stay calm and put together a solid list when it counted.”

Junior Cory Bowersox added an 11th-place finish in the men’s three-meter final with 328.20 points.
