James Madison Sweeps CAA Diving Awards

Redshirt freshman diver Taryn McLaughlin (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) became just the second diver in Colonial Athletic Association history to win the conference’s Diver and Rookie Diver of the Year awards in the same season as the league announced its major honors, Thursday.

Joining McLaughlin as a major award winner was Head Diving Coach Becky Benson who earned women’s Diving Coach of the Year for the fifth year in a row. In addition, Madison collected eight individual All-CAA recognitions as well as earning All-CAA honors in all five relay events. Sophomore Camilla Czulada (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) was honored on the All-Academic Team.

McLaughlin joins Drexel’s Kate Hynes (2006) as the only female divers in CAA history to earn Diver and Rookie Diver of the Year accolades in the same season. The redshirt freshman was also honored as the Outstanding Diver of the Meet at the 2014 CAA Championship. She won the 1-meter competition with 323.90 points and also took first place on the 3-meter board with 373.85 points, which set a new CAA meet record. At the NCAA Zone A Diving Championship, McLaughlin finished 16th in the 3-meter competition with 518.65 points and 22nd in the 1-meter competition with 222 points. It’s the fourth year in a row that the CAA Diver of the Year has come from JMU and McLaughlin is the Dukes’ fourth Rookie Diver of the Year winner in the past five seasons.

Benson was named CAA Diving Coach of the Year for the fifth year in a row after coaching McLaughlin to conference titles on both boards. The Dukes had four of the top eight finishers in the 3-meter competition. She also qualified four divers for the CAA Zone A Diving Championships.

Individual All-CAA honors went to McLaughlin in both diving events, junior Susanne Gingher (Boalsburg, Pa./State College Area) in the 50-yard freestyle, senior Shannon Dubay (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) in both breaststroke events as well as the 200-yard individual medley and senior Kelsey Holmgaard (Roanoke, Va./George Mason) in both individual medley events.

Towson’s Kaitlin Burke was chosen as the CAA Women’s Swimmer of the Year for the second consecutive season while William & Mary’s Jaimie Miller was chosen the CAA Rookie Swimmer of the Year. Towson’s Pat Mead collected Women’s Swimming Coach of the Year for the seventh time.
