Southern Illinois Sweeps 5K Open Water Swim

The Southern Illinois swimming team wrapped up its opening weekend with the 5K Open Water Swim on Saturday morning, held at Little Grassy Lake. Pamela Benitez won on the women's side and Till Pallmann won on the men's side.

The SIU women competed against swimmers from Illinois State and Ohio Wesleyan while the men competed against swimmers from Ohio Wesleyan. Benitez is coming off a win in the Saluki Miler on Friday night, winning the 5K with a time of 1:09:38.00. Helena Amorim (1:11:18.00) finished second and Hannah Pinion (1:13:34.00) finished fifth.

On the men's side Pallmann won the three-mile event with a time of 1:06:37.00 after winning the Saluki Miler on Friday. Ohio Wesleyans' Taylor Smith (1:07:40.00) finished second, and Southerns' Caleb Coots(1:08:03.00) finished third.

Kristian Troxel (1:09:45.00) and Andy Ross (1:09:52.00) finished fourth and fifth in the event, respectively.

The Salukis will be back in action Saturday, Oct. 5 for Maroon and White Fan Appreciation Day.
