Swimming together for the first time in 2013-14, the Pacific swim team picked up a pair of wins over Cal State Bakersfield at home on Saturday, Oct. 26. Nearly duplicating each others efforts in the pool the Tigers men took a 148-114 win over the Roadrunners while the women posted a 143-119 victory.
Throughout the day, the Tigers proved to be just faster than their foes in the pool as Pacific took home the top spot in 19 of the day's 28 events. The Tigers set the tone early with 200 Medley Relay victories on both the men's and the women's sides as the women posted a nearly two second victory in their event while the menjust outtouched the Roadrunners by under .10 of a second.
With the two wins to start the day the Tigers went to work as freshman freestyler Margaux Verger Gourson continued her dominance in the pool with wins in the 1000 and 200 Free. The wins marked the third consecutive meet the young Tiger has taken a win in the pool for Pacific.
Joining the freshman at the top of the standings with a pair of wins was sophomore Haley Preston who dominated the Backstroke events in both the 100 and 200 events. The second year Tiger won the 100 back with a time of 57.51 while takine the 200 by nearly two seconds with a time of 2:03.10. In addition, Preston was part relay team that start Pacific off on the right foot to begin the day.
In addition to the top two, Pacific saw top performances out of Dekel Shahaff in the Relay and 100 Fly, as well as out of Cristina Mardones in the 200 IM and 200 Breast, and out of MaryElla Randall in the 50 Free.
For the men, the Tigers were dominant in the Back and Breast events as Pacific took the top three spots in both the 100 Back and 100 Breast to spot the team with a handful of points. At the top of the heat in the Back was junior Cooper Rogers who posted a winning time of 51.13 just in from of Oliver Simkovic and Curtis Klein. In the Breast it was Cameron Franke that outtouched his teammates, beating Cody Burkard and DJ Schilling. After just losing out in the 100, it was Simkovic that took home the win in the 200 Back as he just beat out Klein again while also outtouching sophomore Hanaya Brasali.
Brasali proved to be a jack-of-all-trades in the pool for the Tigers throughout the day as the second-year Tiger picked up critical points for the Tigers with top-3 finishes in the 200 Back, 100 and 200 Fly, and the 200 Medley Relay. Brasali finished just behind senior Dai Wilson in both the 100 and 200 fly after the senior posted wins with time of 49.66 and 1:52.11, respectively.
The Tigers are back in the pool on Nov. 9 when they travel to Fresno State to take on Santa Cruz and Fresno Pacific in the pool beginning at 12:00 pm.
