Texas Sweeps Indiana, Men Fall to Michigan

Texas freshman swimmer Jack Conger notched three victories and junior swimmer Clay Youngquist added two as the fourth-ranked Longhorns (2-1) defeated No. 9 Indiana and fell to top-ranked defending NCAA champion Michigan Friday evening. 
 
Texas defeated Indiana by a 204-96 margin and fell to the Wolverines by a 166-134 count.  Michigan defeated Indiana, 203-97. 
 
The meet kicked off with Texas posting a one-two finish in the one-meter diving event, where freshman Michael Hixon took the win with 373.25 points.  Freshman Mark Anderson took second with 372.45 points.  Junior Will Chandler placed fourth with 346.65 points.  Chandler took a close second behind Indiana’s Darian Schmidt in the three-meter event with 396.80 points.  Hixon placed second with 379.85 points.
 
The All-American Youngquist pounded out a win in his signature event, the 200-yard freestyle, in 1 minute, 35.71 seconds.  Conger, a gold medalist in the 200m backstroke at last summer’s World University Games, swept the backstroke events.  The Rockville, Md., native led off by taking the 100 backstroke in 48.36 before winning at the 200-yard distance in 1:45.13. 
 
Youngquist notched his second win of the night in the 100 freestyle and edged Michigan All-American Michael Wynalda in 44.40.  Conger produced his third win of the evening and clocked 47.21 to edge Michigan’s Dylan Bosch in the 100 butterfly.  Freshman Clark Smith took fourth in 48.57. 
 
Sophomore Sam Lewis and the Texas distance contingent took on a strong field in the 500 and 1,000 freestyle events.  Lewis put together a strong swim in the 1000 and finished in 9:09.92, a little over two seconds behind U.S. Olympian and NCAA champion Connor Jaeger of Michigan. 
 
The Longhorns resume the regular season on Friday, Nov. 8 when they take on Virginia, Penn State and West Virginia in Charlottesville, Va.  In the meantime, Texas will join Michigan and Indiana to compete in an unscored exhibition meet Saturday morning in Bloomington. 
 
The Texas divers will host the UT Diving Invitational from Nov. 21-23 at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center before the annual Texas Invitational inhabits the TSC from Dec. 5-7. 



 Texas (3-1) totaled eight victories and collected two wins apiece from junior Gretchen Jaques (JAKES) and Madisyn Cox as the Longhorns defeated Indiana and Michigan in a double-dual meet Friday evening at IU’s Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center. 
 
Texas defeated Indiana by a 155-141 count and knocked off Michigan by a 210-90 margin.  Indiana defeated Michigan, 181-119. 
 
The meet kicked off with a one-two-three finish from the Texas divers in the three-meter event, where junior Emma Ivory-Ganja was victorious with 310.10 points.  Sophomore Meghan Houston took second with 299.25 points, and freshman Murphy Bromberg placed third with 290.60 points.  Houston completed the Texas diving sweep with 286.90 points for the win in the one-meter event.  Ivory-Ganja placed second with 278.40 points.
 
Senior Samantha Tucker, the reigning Big 12 Women’s Swimmer of the Week, notched UT’s first individual swimming win of the meet by taking the 200 freestyle in 1 minute, 47.43 seconds.  Jaques posted back-to-back swimming victories in the sprint freestyle events.  The Californian clocked 23.19 to win the 50 freestyle before beginning the meet’s second half by edging Indiana’s Kait Flederbach in the 100 freestyle in 50.18. 
 
Freshman Tasija Karosas continued her strong opening month of competition in the backstroke events.  The Stowe, Vt., native posted a NCAA provisional-qualifying mark and claimed the 200 backstroke in 1:56.74.  Classmate Madisyn Cox of Lubbock produced another Texas victory, as she won the 200 breaststroke in 2:15.60, good for a NCAA “B” cut.  Cox added a second win later in the meet and captured the 200 individual medley in 2:00.58. 
 
Texas closed the meet by handily winning the 400 freestyle relay.  Karosas joined senior Alex Hooper, freshman Brynne Wong and Tucker to get the win in 3:21.06.

 The Indiana women’s swimming and diving team posted a 181-119 win over Michigan and came just three point short of Texas, falling 151.50-148.50 in a dual meet Friday night at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington.
 
The Hoosiers opened the night with a win in the 200 medley relay at Brooklynn Snodgrass, Bronwyn Pasloski, Gia Dalesandro and Kait Flederbach clocked time of 1:42.36. The IU women made it 2-for-2 in events as Lindsay Vrooman was tops in the 1,000 freestyle with her time of 9:46.51.
 
Haley Lips and Vrooman combined to finish 2-3 in the 200 free, with Lips posting a 1:47.91 (NCAA B cut) and Vrooman a 1:48.44. Snodgrass was the winner in the 100 backstroke with her time of 54.36 (NCAA B cut), while Allie Day placed third (54.86).
 
Pasloski made the Hoosiers winners in four of the first five events as she won the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.56. Heather Hayes finished eighth at 1:05.66. Olivia Barker took the win in the 200 butterfly (1:58.93-NCAA B cut), almost two seconds faster than runner-up Courtney Beidler of Michigan. Brenna MacLean was third in 2:00.47.
 
Flederbach was runner up in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.23, while Cynthia Pammett finished ninth (24.18). She followed up with another second-place finish, clocking a 50.20 in the 100 freestyle. Stephanie Armstrong was eighth with a time of 51.63.
 
In diving competition, Cassidy Kahn took fourth in the 1-meter springboard (249.55, with Kate Hillman ninth (219.90). Hillman was second on the 3-meter (366.20) and Kahn 10th (199.50).
 
Snodgrass and Day went 2-3 in the 200 backstroke with Snodgrass coming in at 1:57.39 (NCAA B cut) and Day at 1:59.09 (NCAA B cut). Pasloski touched the wall third in the 200 breaststroke (2:16.63), with Dorina Szekeres seventh (2:22.96).
 
Vrooman made it a sweep of the distance events with a win in the 500 freestyle at 4:49.01. Right behind was Lips in second at 4:50.23. That was followed by a win in the 100 butterfly for Gia Dalesandro, finishing in 53.96 (NCAA B cut).
 
Day was the top Hoosier finisher in the 200 individual medley, placing fourth (2:04.29) with Snodgrass fifth (2:04.57). Indiana wrapped up the meet with a second-place finish in the 400 freestyle as Flederbach, Lips, Armstrong and Pammett came in at 3:23.60.

Hoosiers Drop Dual to Texas, Michigan
 
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Facing the No. 1 and No. 4 teams in the nation, the Indiana men’s swimming and diving team dropped both dual matchups, falling 204-96 to No. 4 Texas and 203-97 to No. 1 Michigan Friday night at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington.
 
The Indiana quartet of James Wells, Tanner Kurz, Cody Miller and Anze Tavcar took fourth in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:30.34. Grayson Smith took seventh in the 1,000 freestyle (9:33.22) with Bradley Stamper eighth (9:43.24).
 
Jackson Miller was the top Hoosier in the 200 free, placing sixth in 1:39.99; Max Irwin was seventh with a time of 1:40.62. It was a race to touch the wall first for the top three in the 100 back, with Texas’ Jack Conger (48.36) just beating out Hoosiers Wells (48.55) and Eric Ress (48.82).
 
Cody Miller took second in the 100 breaststroke in 55.14 (NCAA B cut), while Kurz was fourth in 56.28. Irwin placed seventh in the 200 butterfly (1:52.83), while Joe Powell was ninth (1:56.30).
 
Tavcar was the first Hoosier to finish the 50 freestyle, placing fifth in 20.87. Kurz placed eighth with a time of 21.03. Tavcar was also tops for IU in the 100 free, finishing sixth (45.26), while Jackson Miller was 10th (47.55).
 
In the diving well, Darian Schmidt took third in the 1-meter springboard (356.25), with Emad Abdelatif sixth (322.75) and Conor Murphy seventh (304.65). In 3-meter competition, Schmidt took a 4.35-point win over Texas’ Will Chandler, tallying a score of 400.45. Murphy was fourth (373.35) and Abdelatif sixth (342.10).
 
Ress was second in the 200 backstroke (1:45.91-NCAA B cut), with Steve Schmuhl 10th (1:52.46). Cody Miller touched third in the 200 breaststroke (2:00.85), while Kurz was eighth (2:04.88).
 
Ress was also the top IU swimmer in the 500 free, taking third in 4:28.32, with Smith eighth (4:36.70). Irwin finished sixth in the 100 fly (50.18), with Wells eighth (50.85). Miller led the way for IU in the 200 individual medley with a fifth-place finish (1:51.60), followed by Schmuhl in eighth (1:54.35).
 
Indiana ended the day with a fourth-place finish in the 400 freestyle as Tavcar, Ress, Wells and Jackson Miller recorded a time of 3:02.42.
