Tiffin Men Top Findlay

The Tiffin University men’s swimming and diving team (2-0) picked up their first ever GLIAC win, 133-98 over arch rival Findlay (0-3), Saturday afternoon at Sink Natatorium.

Today was a good day for the Dragons,” Said head coach Margarita Kalmikova.  “Our men were very aggressive from the beginning of the meet until the very end.  To be able to win against our school's biggest rival gives a lot of confidence and motivation for the rest of the season.  Our women competed hard and made a lot of improvements in how they race and how they approach their races."

The men had three swimmers win two races each.  Junior Ty Collins won the 500 and 1000-yard freestyle events (5:11.29, 10:29.98), junior Pedro Van Isschot won the 50 free (22.68) and the 100 butterfly (55.19) while freshman Ygor Zarnado won the 100 and 200 free events (48.94, 1:50.08).

The Dragons picked up wins from freshman Mark Cover on the 1-meter board (140.65 points), freshman Kyle Doss in the 200 individual medley (1:57.33), senior Alex Weaver on the 3-meter board (157.25 points), the 400 medley relay team of Collins, Doss, Van Isschot and Zarnado (3:37.11) and the 400 free relay of Van Isschot, Collins, Zarnado and Doss (3:17.18).

The women (2-1) lost 121-64 to Findlay (1-2).  Freshman Melinda Ulbrecht had the lone victory in winning the 100 breaststroke (1:10.21).  She was also runner-up in the 200 IM (2:32.95).  The Dragons had two swimmers with two runner-up performances:  sophomore Kristen Guballa in the 100 and 200 free events (1:22.93, 2:13.27) and junior Nicole Twarek in the 100 backstroke (1:13.18) and the 1000 free (12:57.97).
