Behind the second record-breaking performance of the season by senior diving captain Nicole Scott (Toronto, Canada), the Rutgers swimming and diving team completed the Frank Elm Invitational in second place, Sunday evening at the Sonny Werblin Recreation Center.
Columbia would finish first in the competition, totaling 1378.5 2 over the three day event. Rutgers managed 1321.5 points to claim second, followed by Army (1312.5 4), Wagner (1285.5), West Chester (1171 6), Drexel (849), Villanova (732 8), UMass (243), Saint Peter’s (236 10) and BU (86).
“I am extremely proud of the way this team fought in all three days of this meet,” said head coach Phil Spiniello. “This was a total team effort, as we showed some promising signs of what is to come in February [at the American Athletic Conference Championships]. Also, congrats to Nicole Scott and Coach Woodruff on a new school and pool record in the platform event.”
Scott would claim first in the platform diving event with a final score of 295.10 points to break both the Rutgers team and pool record. Scott set the platform record last year as well. It is the Canadian’s second Rutgers record of the season, as she also reset the 3-meter dive mark in early November at RU’s quad meet.
Freshman diver Rebecca Gross (Manchester, Pa.) put forth a solid performance in the platform dive as well, as she finished second behind Scott with a score of 207.80.
In the swimming events, sophomore Joanna Wu (Kent, Wash.) posted the highest finish for Rutgers on the day, capturing first-place in the 200 backstroke event (1:59.09).
Senior Mary Moser (Wyomissing, Pa.) posted three top-10 times Sunday, coming in fourth in the 100 freestyle, sixth in the 200 fly and tying for sixth in the 200 butterfly.
Senior Greta Leberfinger (Chatham, N.J.) would be the top finsher for Rutgers in the 200 breaststroke, placing fourth, while fellow senior Allyson Perrotti (Branford, Conn.) came in eighth.
Brittany Guinee (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) led RU in the 200 fly with a time of 2:04.51 to take fourth-place and sophomore Morgan Pfaff (Red Lion, Pa.) finished eighth (2:06.24). In the 1650 freestlye, junior Brogan Lee (Lindstrom, Minn.) turned in a strong effort to finish fourth (17:07.85) and senior Chelsea Rolin (Saint-Lazare, QC, Canada) touched the wall in 17:11.45, good for eighth.
Rutgers hits the road for its first competition away from the confines of the Rutgers Aquatic Center on Dec. 7, as it heads to Boston, Mass. for a dual meet against BU.
