Bucknell Invite Recaps: Day 3

Delaware

After the final day of competition at Kinney Natatorium, the University of Delaware men’s and women’s swimming and diving team finished third and fifth, respectively, at the Bucknell Invitational.
 
The women’s field totaled 10 teams while the men’s side had nine teams that competed.
 
The women’s 400 freestyle relay team highlighted day three of competition for both Blue Hens squad as the four members of the relay took home a second place finish. Alyssa Sanders, Mary Kay Harris, Dominique Montoya and Maggie Tracy finished the relay in a second-best time of 3:29.61.
 
Tracy took home an individual fifth place finish in the 100 freestyle (52.38) while Montoya earned her own top-10 finish in the 100 freestyle (53.24).
 
Junior Hailey Farrell tallied a sixth place finish in the 1650 Freestyle with a time of 17:24.22 as freshman Annie Nunes also earned a sixth place finish of her own. Nunes finished the 200 Breaststroke in 2:24.10.
 
For the second consecutive day, Matt Marquez led the Delaware men with an individual fourth place finish. Marquez finished the 200 butterfly in a team-best 1:53.55.
 
Marquez was also a member of the men’s 400 freestyle Relay team that garnered a fifth place finish. Marquez, Tomás Elder and Everett Albert completed the relay in 3:07.57.
 
To wrap up the Blue Hen men’s top-10 finishes, Cory Camp finished the 1,650 freestyle in 15:59.15 to earn a seventh place finish.
 
The Delaware men and women will take a week off from competition until Dec. 5, when the Blue Hens travel to Knoxville, Tenn. to compete in USS Short Court Nationals. The Short Court National is a three-day event.


Penn State

After claiming his first victory of the season on Friday in the three-meter diving event at the Bucknell Invitational, T.J. Schenkel (Richboro, Pa.) doubled his win total on Sunday, sweeping the invite’s diving competitions with a victory in the one-meter event. Fellow Penn State diver Lucas Kachurick (McKeesport, Pa.) grabbed second place in the one-meter.
 
Kachurick and Schenkel qualified for the finals with the second and third highest scores respectively. Kachurick earned a score of 283.35, the best of his season in the event, while Schenkel followed, recording a mark of 272.25 in the prelims.
 
In the final, Schenkel had the best performance of his career for the second time over the weekend, posting a score of 309.35, besting his previous personal record of 301.05. The victory is the junior’s second of the season and fourth of his career. Schenkel has now won the one-meter diving event twice in his Nittany Lion career.
 
Kachurick picked up a second place finish for the second time this weekend, narrowly being edged by Schenkel. Kachurick posted a score of 304.80 in the final, breaking the 300 point barrier for the first time as a member of the Blue and White.
 
After this weekend’s competition, the divers won’t return to competition until 2014, when the teams will travel to Naples, Fla. to take on the Florida Gators on January 4. The swimming team is set to compete in the Texas Invitational down in Austin, Texas from Dec. 5-7.
