Fall Frenzy Recaps - Day 2

Wingate

The Wingate University men's swimming team is third and the Bulldog women's swimming team is fifth after the second day of the Fall Frenzy Invitational at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center in downtown Charlotte Saturday. Twelve women's teams and 11 men's teams are competing in this year's event (Saturday's final results, Saturday's prelim results).

WINGATE WOMEN

Wingate senior Katie Pheil (Ocala, Fla.) finished second in the 200 Freestyle with a time of 1:52.27. Bulldog freshman Vika Arkhipova (Seversk, Russia) was fourth in the 100 Backstroke with a time of 58.07. Arkhipova swam the inaugural leg on Wingate's fifth-place 200 Medley Relay team (1:48.31). She was joined by seniors Valerie Dembny (Bremen, Germany) and Eduarda Zucco (Brasque, Brazil) and junior Jasmine Arzadon (Lorton, Va.).

Bulldog freshman Jessika Weiss (Macon, Ga.) won the 100 Breaststroke B final with a time of 1:06.28. The College of Charleston leads after two days of the three-day Fall Frenzy Invitational with 1032 points. Queens University of Charlotte is second (996.5), followed by Gardner-Webb University (938), Georgia Southern University (680) and Wingate (623).

WINGATE MEN

Wingate sophomore Roman Kanyuka (Moscow, Russia) had a big night, winning the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 56.12. Bulldog senior Marko Blazevski (Skopje, Macedonia) was third in the 400 Individual Medley with a time of 3:58.27.

Blazevski swam the first installment on Wingate's fourth-place 800 Freestyle Relay quartet (6:52.67). He was joined by sophomores Ossian Arvidsson (Kungälv, Sweden) and Dylon Johnson (Fletcher, N.C.) and freshman Evan Kolovich (New Market, Md.).

The College of Charleston leads after two days of the three-day Fall Frenzy Invitational with 991.5 points. Queens University of Charlotte is second (987.5), followed by Wingate (693), Gardner-Webb University (606) and St. Andrews University (588).


College of Charleston

College of Charleston had another successful day at the Wingate Fall Frenzy, posting a new school record and moving into first place with the men and women.
 
The CofC men now lead with a first-place score of 991.5, just a smidge in front of Queens University of Charlotte. The women have a more sizable lead over Queens with 1032 points.
 
Sophomore Taylor Hollingsworth followed up Sarah Boyle’s school-record breaking performance from Friday with one of her own on Saturday, setting a new record in the 100 breaststroke with a fourth-place time of 1:05.46.
 
Boyle herself came in second in the 100 backstroke (57.28), and also took fourth in the 100 butterfly (56.42).
 
Jayme Groth led the Cougars in the 100 fly with a time of 56.09 for third place, while Maly Taylor took fifth (57.06) in the event for a large collection of points.
 
Junior Sarah Graif took third in the 200 freestyle (1:52.56) and senior Meredith Smith was right behind her in fourth place (1:53.18). Michelle Whitfield finished seventh (4:38.32) in the 400 IM.
 
CofC performed well in the 200 medley relay, placing second as Boyle, Hollingsworth, Taylor and Groth combined for a time of 1:45.78. The 800 free relay of Graif, Mary Frances Babrowicz, Skye Reeder and Smith placed fourth (7:45.31).
 
The men were led by a strong performance from freshman Buckley Powell. Powell placed second in the 100 butterfly (49.98), and helped the 200 medley relay team of Cason Brown, Will Ryan, Powell and Greg Karel to a second-place finish (1:33.14).
 
Fellow freshman Brown took third in the 100 backstroke (49.94), and sophomore Alex Wood finished third in the 200 free (1:41.96). Josh Shaffer placed fourth (1:42.13) in that event.
 
Ryan added more points with a fourth-place finish in the 100 breast (58.23) and Pablo Ortiz led the Cougars in the 400 IM, finishing seventh (4:05.99).
 
The 800 free relay team of Tad Spence, Wood, Dave Sherrier and Shaffer finished second with a time of 6:51.74.
