Wingate Fall Frenzy Recaps: Day 1

Wingate

The Wingate University men's swimming team is tied for third and the Bulldog women's swimming team is fifth after the first day of the Fall Frenzy Invitational at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center in downtown Charlotte Friday. Twelve women's teams and 11 men's teams are competing in this year's event (Friday's results).

MEN

Wingate has 301 points, tying the Bulldogs with St. Andrews University. Queens University of Charlotte is first with 475 points. The College of Charleston is second with 388 points. Wingate senior Marko Blazevski was second in the 500 Freestyle with a time of 4:35.81.

Bulldog freshman Oystein Fjeldberg won the 500 Freestyle C Final with a time of 4:45.30. Senior Reed Miller was sixth in the 50 Freestyle (21.34), while classmate Tim Kniffler was seventh in the 200 Individual Medley (1:54.83).

WOMEN

Wingate has 267 points, only 11 points behind fourth-place Georgia Southern University. Senior Katie Pheil was fourth in the 200 Individual Medley with a D2 "B" time of 2:07.97. Classmate Eduarda Zucco was fifth in the 50 Freestyle, touching with a time of 25.04.

Bulldog redshirt sophomore Julie Wessler won the 500 Freestyle B Final with her time of 5:08.15. The 2013 Fall Frenzy Invitational continues Saturday with preliminaries (10 a.m.) and finals (6 p.m.). On Sunday, preliminaries will be held at 10 a.m. with finals to follow at 5 p.m.


College of Charleston

College of Charleston swimming saw a number of outstanding performances as the Cougars outperformed their seeding times and settled in second place after the first day of the Wingate Fall Frenzy.
 
The Cougar men swimmers posted a team score of 415, good for second place behind Queens University of Charlotte. The women also came in second with a score of 388 behind Queens.
 
Senior Sarah Boyle excited the CofC contingent by breaking the school record in the 200 IM, posting a third-place time of 2:06.52.
 
The Cougars won the 50 freestyle as Sarah Graif (23:43) and Jayme Groth (23.58) loaded up on points with first- and second-place finishes, respectively.
 
Junior Annie Berdusco led the Cougar efforts in the 500 free, placing seventh with a time of 5:07.07.
 
In the 200 free relay, the Cougar quartet of Sarah Graif, Meredith Smith, Mary Frances Babrowicz and Jayme Groth took first place with a time of 1:34.65.
 
Charleston finished third in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:53.23 with Boyle, Liz Mooney, Groth and Graif.
 
In the men’s half, sophomore Alex Wood took second in the 50 free with a time of 20.71. Greg Karel came in fourth in the event at 20.87.
 
Josh Shaffer took third in the 500 free with a time of 4:37.09. In the 200 IM, CofC came in fifth with Pablo Ortiz’s time of 1:54.38.
 
Charleston took second in both relays, posting a time of 1:22.92 in the 200 free relay with Wood, Elijah Bohon, Dave Sherrier and Greg Karel.
 
In the 400 medley relay, a youthful foursome of Cason Brown, Will Ryan, Buckley Powell and Wood finished second with a time of 3:21.79.
 
Over in the Georgia Tech Invitational, CofC diver Megan Norton posted a score of 181.25 in the one-meter, good for 19th place. Nicole DeMarco posted a score of 151.60.
 
Action continues in both venues tomorrow from Wingate and Georgia Tech.
