Patriot Invite Recaps: Day 2

George Washington Men

Junior Garrett Cottingham won the 100-yard breaststroke in a season-best time to pace the George Washington men’s swimming team on Day 2 of the Patriot Invitational at Atlantic 10 newcomer George Mason on Friday evening.

GW is in fourth place with 342 points following two days of the three-day event at the Patriots’ Jim McKay Natatorium in the Aquatics and Fitness Center.

Cottingham was the Colonials’ top finisher of the night as he took home top honors in the 100-yard breaststroke with a season-best time of 57.39 seconds.

Junior Goran Koprivnjak earned a third-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley with a season-best time of 4:02.93, while freshman Matt McPherson finished seventh in a season-low time of 4:08.24. Senior Jake Mortensen claimed fourth in the 100-yard backstroke with a season-best time of 51.27 seconds.

In the 200-yard freestyle, sophomore Jordan Sharples and freshman Liam Huffman earned fifth and sixth, respectively, with times of 1:41.67 and 1:43.06.

The 200 medley relay of Mortensen, Cottingham, Keegan and Balteanu finished sixth in 1:34.97. The Colonials wrapped the night with a third-place finish in the 800 free relay as Koprivnjak, Huffman, Sharples and Balteanu clocked in at 6:49.99.

Host George Mason is in first with 691 points followed by UNC-Wilmington in second with 638 points and UMBC in third with 523. Behind GW are Seton Hall in fifth (257), American in sixth (196), NCAA Division II Shippensburg in seventh (91) and Howard in eighth (26).

GW closes the third and final day of the Patriot Invitational on Saturday, beginning with the preliminary heats of the 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast and 100 fly at 10 a.m., followed by the 1,650 free finals.


George Washington Women

Freshman Lauren Law set a new school record among multiple season-best times as the George Washington women’s swimming team wrapped Day 2 of the Patriot Invitational at nearby George Mason on Friday.

GW remains in second place with 530 points following the second day of the three-day event at the Patriots’ Jim McKay Natatorium in the Aquatics and Fitness Center.

Law broke the 400-yard individual medley record for the second time on Friday with a time of 4:24.76 for a first-place finish. The rookie originally set a school mark of 4:27.71 when she won the preliminary heat earlier in the day, then bested her own time in the finals. Senior Remy Neville – whose record Law broke – took fifth in the 400 IM in 4:33.34.

Senior Lindsay Moore finished the 100-yard backstroke in a season-best time of 57.0 seconds to earn second place. Sophomore Madison Reinker earned second in the 200 free in 1:52.94, followed by senior Sloan Saunders in fifth (1:54.87), sophomore Kally Vanderbilt in sixth (1:55.05) and senior Sydney Saunders in eighth (1:56.98).

Freshman Carly Whitmer and junior Morgan Zebley earned third and fourth, respectively, in the 100-yard butterfly when Whitmer clocked in at 56.17 seconds followed closely by Zebley in 56.29.

In the 100-yard breaststroke, Lee took home sixth (1:05.22) while Neville earned eighth (1:05.80). The 200 medley relay of Moore, Lee, Zebley andSydney Saunders finished fifth when they touched the wall in 1:46.25.

The Colonials wrapped Friday night action on a high note by winning the 800 free relay. The team of senior Caroline Myers, classmate Sloan Saunders, Law and Reinker took home top honors with a time of 7:34.66. The Buff and Blue’s ‘B’ squad of Lee, sophomore Hannah Schaefer, senior Melissa Fernandez and sophomore Kally Vanderbilt clocked in 7:45.43 for a fourth-place finish.

Host George Mason leads the pack with 660.5 points followed by GW in second, Richmond in third (474) and Seton Hall in fourth (335.5). UMBC sits in fifth place (276), while UNC-Wilmington is sixth (268), followed by NCAA Division II Shippensburg in seventh (135), American in eighth (97) and Howard in ninth (10).
