Doug Coers Invite Recaps: Day 1

Ball State

The Ball State men’s and women’s swimming and diving team completed the first day of the 10th annual Doug Coers Invitational. After the first session the women are in first with 251 points while the men are in second with 184.5 points.
 
The Grand Valley women are in second with 188 points while the men have first place with 251 points. The Findlay women have 87 points while the men have 76.5.
 
Emily Wisolek, Carlena Magley, Cole Smith and Jake Brehmer were the leading performers for the Cardinals on the first day of competition.
 
The meet started off with Audrey Rodawig, Emily Wisolek, Jordan VanWinkle and Carlena Magley turning in a season-best time of 1:38.58 for second place. Austin Green, Drew Tharp, Michael Oaks and Cole Smith also came in second with a time of 1:26.92.
 
Wisolek would go on to win the 500 free with a season-best time of 5:07.00. Andrew Lamb would take second place in the 500 free with a time of 4:54.36. Season-best times were swam by Leighann Mattson (5:22.98 – 4th), Genevieve Hayes (5:23.81 – 5th), JD Middleton (4:56.02 – 4th) and Neal Fennig (4:53.03 – 5th).
 
The 200 IM saw Jordan VanWinkle earn second place with a time of 2:13.05. Bridgette Ruehl came in fourth with a 2:15.02 while Kimberly Scott rounded out the top five with a time of 2:15.64. On the men’s side Tanner Barton came in fourth with a season-best time of 2:01.23, while Tucker Hale (2:04.50 – 6th) and Conner Snare (2:06.57 – 7th) also swam season-bests.
 
In the 50 free, Magley and Smith both turned in wins for Ball State. Magley touched with a 24.19 while Smith earned a season-best time of 21.60. Rodawig and Jessica Extine came in fourth and fifth place with times of 25.16 and 25.31, respectively. Austin Green came in third with a season-best time of 21.86 while Logan Kisinger and Shane Brown tied for fifth with season-best times of 21.96. Nick Rodriguez also clocked a season-best time with a 22.74.
 
Brehmer won the 3-meter competition with a career-best mark of 309.15. The score marked the first time the senior had broken 300 points and he is 11 points away from a NCAA Zone cut. On the women’s side Madie Zirzow finished in third with a season-best mark of 229.25. Jamie Denlinger and Quinn Bixler also finished with season-best marks with scores of 225.20 and 215.20. Brittany Penn finished with a 190.30.
 
The final event of the evening saw the women’s 400 medley relay of Mallory Miles, Ruehl, Haley Richter and Magley clock a 3:53.38 for first place. The men’s relay of Hale, Mitch Prather, Tharp and Green came in second with a time of 3:38.13.
