Brenau Invite Recaps - Day 1

West Florida

The West Florida women’s swimming and diving team broke two school records on a successful first day at the Brenau Invitational on Saturday. The Argonauts relay teams in the 200 freestyle and 400 medley posted new school records, while UWF finished day one of the invitational in second place in the 11-team field.

The Argos started well in the first event with a win in the 200 free, as the team of Cheryl Corvo (Fort Walton Beach, Fla./Florida Gulf Coast), Peggy de Villiers (Somerset West, South Africa/Drury), Carla Robles (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef HS) and Anna-Marie Macht (Markkleeberg, Germany/Darton State) raced to a first place finish with a new school record time of 1:38.20.

UWF placed first in the other relay event of the day, the 400 medley. The team of Savannah Antonetz (Lake Charles, La./Barbe HS), Macht, Corvo and de Villiers posted a time of 3:59.95, also a new school record.

The Argos also had several strong finishes in the individual events, led by de Villiers’ first place finish in the 50 free with a 24.44. She was followed closely by teammate Emily Mitchell (Allen Park, Mich./Darton State) in second place with a 24.77. Antonetz had UWF’s top time in the 500 free with an eighth place finish at 5:21.28, and Corvo finished fourth in the 200 IM with a time of 2:13.58.

UWF ranks second in the team standings with 212 points, and Limestone leads the field with 215. SCAD (206.5), Converse (158) and Brenau (86.5) are third, fourth and fifth, respectively.

“We had a strong day’s racing, and we’re right in the hunt for the win after today’s first session,” said UWF head coach Andrew Hancock. “We came in and raced very hard, and we think that tomorrow we’re in for some very good things.”

The Argos will return for day two at the Brenau Invitational on Saturday. The UWF divers will also be in action on Saturday at the Emory Diving Invitational.
