Brown Sweeps Maine

The Brown men's swimming and diving team scored a resounding 226-55 victory over the University of Maine on Saturday at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.

The afternoon began with the 200 Yard Medley Relay as the Bears took the top-four spots in the competition.  The group of Nicholas Johnston(Pleasanton, Calif.), Connor Lohman (Prospect, Ky.), William LaCosta (Gladstone, N.J.), and Jack Nee (Pepper Pike, Ohio) combined to set a mark of 1:35.25 for the event.

The fourth event of the day saw Kai Wombacher (Apex, N.C.) and Sovijja Pou(Beaverton, Ore.) place in the top-two spots with times of 9:48.36 and 10:04.79, respectively in the 1000 Yard Freestyle.

The Bears boasted another impressive performance in the 200 Yard Freestyle, led by Cory Mayfield and his top mark of 1:42.15.  Johnston struck again with another triumph, this time in the 100 Yard Backstroke with a mark of 52.11 to finish ahead of Maine's Matt England.

The trio of Lohman, Thomas Mercurio(Novato, Calif.), and Matt Luminais (Haverford, Pa.) swept the top-three slots in the 100 Yard Breaststroke beforeTommy Glenn (Haddonfield, N.J.), Brian Barr (Martinsville, N.J.), and Max Bley-Male (Portland, Ore.) followed suit in the 200 Yard Butterfly.

Lohman added another victory to his resume on Saturday, taking first place in the 400 Yard IM with a time of 4:03.41 before the Bears swept the top-six in the 100 Yard Freestyle led by Jeffrey Strausser (Lafayette, Calif.). 

In diving action, Jonathan Schlafer (Uniontown, Ohio) and William Rosenberg (Strongsville, Ohio) tallied victories in the One Meter and Three Meter diving events respectively.

The Bears will return to action for a three-day event at Princeton from December 6-8.



The Brown women's swimming and team squad outlasted the Maine Black Bears by a count of 198-97 at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center on Saturday.  The Bears open their season with three straight victories after defeating UMass-Amherst and Northeastern last weekend.

The group of Paige Gilley (Cupertino, Calif.), Katie Roach (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Emma Lamothe (Brimfield, Mass.), and Kate Dillione (Newtown, Pa.) opened the meet with a win in the 200 Yard Medley Relay (1:46.42).

The Bears followed that effort with a convincing win in the 1000 Yard Freestyle by Megan Viohl's (Millersville, Md.) mark of 10:20.12.  Viohl also scored a title in the 500 Yard Freestyle with a resounding 30 second win over Maine's Kayla Merchant (5:00.84).  Brown boasted five of the top-six positions in the 200 Yard Freestyle, led by a triumphant Leigh Holmes (Alma, Mich.) and her time of 1:58.08.  The 100 Yard Butterfly proved to be a winner for Holmes as well, recording a mark of 57.65.

Catherine Pittman (Williamsburg, Va.) notched a victory in the 100 Yard Backstroke before Maine got on the board with a win in the 100 Yard Breaststroke.

Gina Matsumoto (Farmington Hills, Mich.) took home the crown in the 200 Yard Butterfly with a time of 2:03.40 before Gilley tallied another win, this time in the 50 Yard Freestyle with a mark of 24.15.  Roach claimed the second victory of her afternoon with a win in the 200 Yard Breaststroke (2:23.82), finishing nearly 10 seconds ahead of Maine's Cecelia McEachern.

The Bears closed out the afternoon with a Kate Dillione triumph in the 200 Yard IM (2:07.37) and a team victory in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay (3:37.10).

Brown resumes its 2013-14 schedule at the Princeton Invite for a three-day event from December 6-8.
