The men's swimming and diving squad opened up the season with a resounding 201-93 victory over visiting UMass-Amherst on Saturday at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.
The Bears claimed all swimming events on the day while the Minutemen claimed the diving events.
Cory Mayfield (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.) scored two victories on the day, taking home titles in the 1,000 yard freestyle (9:34.00) and the 500 yard freestyle (4:35.35). The Bears claimed all top three spots in the 400 yard medley relay as the four-some of Alex Pascal (Longmeadow, Mass.), Thomas Mercurio (Novato, Calif.), Tommy Glenn (Haddonfield, N.J.), and Oliver Diamond (Salt Lake City, Utah) claimed the top spot with a mark of 3:24.05.
Pascal and Glenn struck again later in the day, scoring titles in the 100 yard backstroke (51.67) and 200 yard butterfly (1:49.06), respectively. Glenn became a triple event winner with his victory in the 100 yard butterfly (48.13) later in the day. Diamond also boasted a victory in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 47.59, while Mercurio also took home the 200 yard breaststroke crown (2:05.92)
In the 200 yard backstroke, freshman Max Bley-Male notched his first collegiate victory, checking in a mark of 1:52.89.
The Bears got contributions from another freshman as Connor Lohman(Prospect, Ky.) claimed the 200 yard IM crown with a mark of 1:55.11. Brown closed out the swimming events in style, taking home the 200 yard freestyle relay (1:22.53) lead by Glenn, Pascal, Jack Nee (Pepper Pike, Ohio), and Jeffrey Strausser. Earlier in the day, Strausser, the native of Lafayette, California, scored a victory in the 50 yard freestyle (20.47).
The Bears will return to action next Saturday when they host the University of Maine at noon in the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.
The Brown women's swimming and diving team went 2-0 on the day as they defeated UMass-Amherst, 173-127, and Northeastern, 156-144 on Saturday at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.
Kate Dillione (Newtown, Pa.) was the lone double event winner for the Bears as she took home victories in the 200 yard freestyle (1:51.17) and the 100 yard freestyle (52.00). Dillione currently holds the school records in the 200 yard freestyle and the 400 yard medley relay.
In 500 yard freestyle action, freshman Megan Viohl (Millersville, Md.) scored her first collegiate victory with her time of 5:02.60.
The Bears claimed the top two spots in the 200 yard freestyle relay as Reia Tong (Bethesda, Md.), Megan Nolet (Saratoga, Calif.), Paige Gilley(Cupertino, Calif.), and Kate Dillione combined to score a time of 1:35.11. The second group consisting of Emma Lamothe (Brimfield, Mass.), Leigh Holmes (Alma, Mich.), Alexis Daswick (Scottsdale, Ariz.), and Maggie Jordan(Niskayuna, N.Y.) clocked in a 1:37.67.
Sophomore Gina Matsumoto (Farmington Hills, Mich.) claimed three top three finishes, taking second in the 200 yard butterfly (2:03.33) and third in the 100 yard butterfly (57.75) behind teammate Leigh Holmes (56.86). Matsumoto also recorded a third place finish in the 200 yard IM with a mark of 2:08.93.
The Bears return to action next Saturday when they play host to the University of Maine in the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center beginning at noon.
