Albion Sweeps Tiffin, Women Fall to Hillsdale

Albion College earned first place points in seven events Friday, but it had enough athletes to earn a 137-98 victory over the Division II program from Tiffin University.

Mike Crinion won both diving events, and Justin DuChene (200-yard breaststroke), Brian Fiorillo (100 freestyle), and Andrew Mattson (400 individual medley) won individual swimming events. Derek Bosko swam for both relay teams that achieved first-place finishes.

“We learned a few things,” Albion Coach Jake Taber said. “It was nice to see what we could do against scholarship athletes. It was a matter of depth that created scoring opportunities.”

Taber praised Crinion, who is in his first season as a diver at the collegiate level. Crinion scored 156.40 points to eke out the win on the 3-meter board by 1.05 points.

Albion had the top two teams in the 400 medley relay as it gained the early lead in the meet. Charlie Shinske, Bosko, Josh Boren, and Tom Parsons achieved a time of 3:49.53.

Brad Melpolder engaged in a competitive race in the 1,000 freestyle. He completed the race less than two seconds behind Ty Collins.

Albion overwhelmed Tiffin in the 400 IM and freestyle events. Mattson’s winning time in the IM was 4:17.76, while Blake Blair finished third. Fiorillo, Matt Hooper, and Parsons scored second, third, and fourth place finishes, respectively, in the 200 freestyle, Bosko, Nick Deppner, and Garret Bosworth did likewise in the 50, and Hooper, Shinske, and William Schmidt scored a 2-3-4 finish in the 500.

Brad Collins was the runner-up to DuChene in the breaststroke, Mattson and DuChene finished second and third, respectively, in the 200 butterfly, and Blair, Austin Bateman, and Loren Bazzell scored second, third, and fourth, respectively, in the 200 backstroke.

Bosko, Bateman, Fiorillo, and Melpolder formed the winning lineup in the freestyle relay. The Britons finished the race in 3:14.59, for a margin of nearly 1 ½ seconds over Tiffin.

Albion returns home for meets Nov. 15-16. The Britons will dive into the Dean Aquatic Center pool against Alderson Broaddus on Friday and against Alderson Broaddus and Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rival Alma College on Saturday.

Albion College won nearly every event as it defeated Tiffin University, 170-42, in a women’s swimming & diving dual meet. It was a split decision, however, as host Hillsdale College squeezed a 111-103 victory over the Britons.

Anna Hargrove defeated all opponents in the 200-yard backstroke, finishing the race in 2:14.21, and she earned a runner-up finish in the 200 individual medley (2:18.27). Julia Russell scored first place points in both diving events.

Julie Okorn produced a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle (2:02.63) and a third-place performance in the 100 freestyle (56.76 seconds). Lindy Williams (200 butterfly), Jourden Burke (200 backstroke), Laura Steavenson (500 freestyle), and Kylene Slocum (200 breaststroke) were third in their respective events.

Hillsdale entered its relay teams as exhibition, giving Albion first-place points in both events. Jourden Burke, Slocum, Okorn, and Lauren Pawelec completed the 400 medley in 4:40.69, while Lauren Cook, Pawelec, Hargrove and Steavenson achieved a time of 3:48.97 in the 400 freestyle.

Albion returns home for meets Nov. 15-16. The Britons will dive into the Dean Aquatic Center pool against Alderson Broaddus on Friday and against Alderson Broaddus and Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rival Alma College on Saturday.
