Ball State Falls to Evansville, Toledo

The Ball State men’s swimming and diving team opened up the 2013-14 season dropping a 179-109 contest to Evansville Saturday afternoon. Seniors Drew Tharp and Michael Oaks and junior Jake Brehmer earned individual wins for the Cardinals.

Tharp swept the butterfly clocking a 51.87 in the 100 fly and a 1:55.18 in the 200 fly. Oaks took the 200 free with a time of 1:47.60. Brehmer took the top spot in the 3 meter diving competition earning a mark of 254.10.

In the relays, the 200 medley relay of Tucker Hale, Conner Snare, Tharp and Cole Smith turned in a 1:40.73           while the 400 free relay of Austin Green, Neal Fennig, Smith and Michael Oaks clocked a 3:13.69.

Notable finishes in the freestyle include Cole Smith and Austin Green who earned third and fourth places with times of 21.90 and 22.05 in the 50 free. Oaks came in second in the 100 free with a 48.22 followed by Green who clocked a 48.60. Fennig came in second in the 200 free with a 1:48.96. In the distance races, Andrew Lamb came in third in the 500 and 1000 free with a 5:02.39 and 10:22.79, respectively. Fennig clocked a 5:03.71 in the 500 free.

In the fly, freshman Tanner Barton finished second in the 100 fly with a 53.78 and third in the 200 fly with a 1:58.66. Classmate Bradley Ridge clocked a 2:03.81 in the 200 fly for fourth place.

Drew Sullenbarger and Hale went third and fourth in the 100 back with times of 55.05 and 56.47. Cameron Watters was right behind with a 58.78. Sullenbarger came in second in the 200 back with a 2:01.33.

The men take a break and will see action next with the Doug Coers Invitational held Friday, Nov. 22 – Saturday, Nov. 23 at the Lewellen Aquatics Center. 



 The Ball State women’s swimming and diving team dropped a 171-124 meet to conference rival Toledo Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals claimed five event wins led by senior Bridgette Ruehl who swept the breaststroke events.

For the third meet in a row, Ruehl claimed two individual wins in the breaststroke. Against the Rockets Ruehl swam a 1:04.23 100 breast and a 2:20.85 200 breast. Senior Haley Richter also claimed a win for the Cardinals swimming a 52.43 100 free. Freshman diver Brittany Penn earned the top spot in the 1 meter competition with a 221.62 mark. The 200 free relay of freshman Audrey Rodawig, senior Emily Wisolek, freshman Jessica Extine and Carlena Magley turned in a 1:39.22.

Other notable finishes for Ball State on the day included freshman Kara Berg who swam season-best times in the 100 free and 200 free with times of 57.46 and 2:04.68, respectively. Classmate Jessica Extine touched at 25.20 in the 50 free which was a season-best time. Senior Wisolek turned in season-bests in the 200 free with a 1:55.15 and in the 500 free with a 5:07.15.

In the 100 back, freshmen Courtney Mudd and Kimberly Scott clocked season-best times at 1:01.49 and 1:02.81, respectively. The 200 back saw senior Mallory Miles turn in a 2:11.96.

Freshman Katie Horn turned in season-best times in the 100 and 200 fly with times of 59.21 and 2:09.29. Senior Stacey Wierman improved on her 100 and 200 breast times clocking a 1:06.80 and 2:24.30. Scott touched the wall at 2:36.52.

Ball State is back in action on Friday, Nov. 8 when it hosts Miami at Lewellen Aquatics Center at 6 p.m.
