Johns Hopkins Leads Four of Five Match-Ups at Thomas Murphy Invite

The Johns Hopkins men's swimming team won the first five events on day one of the Thomas Murphy Invitational. Hopkins leads host Loyola, 70-37, and Marywood, 76-31, through six events. The Blue Jays are looking to improve to 3-0 on the season as they head into day two.

Hopkins opened with a strong win the 400 Medley Relay as junior Dylan Davis, senior Joe Acquaviva, junior Greg Kogut and senior Anthony Lordi swam a time of 3:25.66 to win by more than eight seconds. Davis got the Blue Jays off on a strong foot with more than a one second lead after the 100 Back. The JHU team of freshmen Patrick Flynn and Bryan Pon, senior David Woodford and freshman Jeremy Bauchwitz placed third with a time of 3:34.56, finishing just a half second out of second place.

Freshman Andrew Greenhalgh then won the 500 Free by more than six seconds as he touched the wall in 4:40.81. Freshman Josh Hughes placed third in 4:48.61 and junior Berkay Polat placed fifth in 4:53.72. The Blue Jays turned in an impressive performance in the 200 IM, sweeping the top four spots. Acquaviva got the win as he finished in 1:58.24, just beating Flynn to the wall by two-hundredths of a second. Freshman Scott Sterrett placed third in 1:58.51, followed by classmate Muhammad Hudhud in fourth in 2:00.35. 
 
Lordi and Kogut then took first and third in the 50 Free as JHU built on its lead. Lordi took the top spot with a time of 20.92, while Kogut finished in 21.49 for third. Hopkins then swept the top two spots in the 800 Free Relay. Greenhalgh, Hughes, junior Ryan Cunningham and Lordi got the win with a time of 7:02.98. The team of Hudhud, Sterrett, Flynn and Bauchwitz claimed second with a time of 7:06.98.
The second session of the Thomas Murphy Invitational continues at 10:00 am on Saturday, November 2. The third and final session will begin at 3:00 pm.



The Johns Hopkins women's swim team placed second in four out of five swimming events on day one of the Thomas Murphy Invitational Friday. Hopkins trails host Loyola, 77-30, but leads Marywood, 78-29, and St. Francis, 55-36.

Hopkins opened the meet with a second-place finish in the 400 Medley Relay. Sophomore Sean McGrath, freshman Pilar Shimizu and seniors Taylor Kitayama and Sarah Rinsma swam a time of 4:00.18. The JHU team of junior Hannah Benn, freshmen Kailyn Koh and Shirley Chan and junior Jillian Liwacz placed fifth in 4:05.15.

Junior Ana Bogdanovski then placed fifth in the 500 Free as she touched in 5:16.71. Freshman Kristen Kaiser placed eighth with a time of 5:22.13. Junior Sammi Fox placed second in the 200 IM as she finished in 2:14.02 and classmate Kylie Holden took seventh place with a time of 2:15.50. Senior Kylie Ternes just missed a first-place finish in the 50 Free by 0.16 seconds as she settled for second in a time of 24.60. Koh then finished in fifth in 24.91 and sophomore Megan Auzenbergs placed sixth in 25.17. 
 
Hopkins closed out its night with second and third-place finishes in the 800 Free Relay. Rinsma, sophomore Ellen Marcus, McGrath and Bogdanovski finished in 7:49.05 for second place. The team of Kitayama, freshman Emily Lubin, Kaiser and Auzenbergs finished in 8:00.04 for third.
The second session of the Thomas Murphy Invitational continues at 10:00 am on Saturday, November 2. The third and final session will begin at 3:00 pm.
