Utah Hires Outside Investigators

The investigation into ousted Utah head coach Greg Winslow is widening.  The university announced on Monday that it has hired two attorneys - one local and one with extensive experience representing schools during NCAA investigations - to tackle the investigations.  Among other things the attorneys will review allegations that Winslow, among other things routinely arrived at practice drunk, assaulted an assistant, and tied a swimmer to a PVC pipe and had him swim underwater until he lost consciousness.

Winslow was suspended with pay from the University last month on the verge of the Pac 12 championships.  The Utes have already begun advertising for a new head coach.  While the allegations had been known for some time, the suspension was a result of an Arizona State police report alleging sexual abuse of a swimmer while Winslow was an assistant at Arizona State.

According to Utah Athletic Director Chris Hill, the investigation will soley focus on WInslow's six years at Utah and not the ASU allegations.  Glazier, ofBond Schoeneck & King, has proven the go-to person for universities undergoing athletic department scandals.  Most recently, Glazier has advised the University of Miami in recent allegations into its football program.

"The issue is to find out what we know, what the athletic department knew, what the athletic department maybe should have known, what are the things that happened," Hill said. "What, if appropriate, improvements need to be made in our program."

The Utes appear to be covering all bases in an effort to defend themselves from the types of penalities imposed upon Penn State in light of the Jerry Sandusky scandal.  It's not known what steps Arizona State has taken to do the same.  ASU began an investigation into the abuse last fall after the alleged victim's father reported the abuse to the University Police.  Winslow denied the allegations in the Arizona State report which is now in the hands of the Maricopa County Sheriff's department.
