Michigan Women Announce Class

University of Michigan head coach Mike Bottom and diving coach KZ Li announced the additions of six women's swimmers and one woman diver to the incoming 2013-14 freshman class this week. The six join the Wolverine's haul of Fall signees.  Additionally, SwimSwam.com is reporting that UNC's Kelsey Cummings will also be moving to Michigan in the Fall.

The Spring signees include Briana Jurries (Phoenix, Ariz./Valley Christian HS), Celia Keany (Lake Oswego, Ore./Lake Oswego HS), Claudia Goswell (Sydney, Australia/Baker College), Fiona Ma (Hong Kong, China/Diocesan Girls' School), Madeline Eden (Edina, Minn./Edina HS), Mary Kate Leary (Atlanta, Ga./Druid Hills HS) and Zaenab Hage (Laval, Quebec/Antoine-de-Saint-Expury).

"We are excited to bring this group of student-athletes into our program at the University of Michigan," said Bottom. "We recruit swimmers who can not only have the potential to compete at high levels athletically, but who can also fit into the culture we are building, and these women are fine examples of both. This is an outstanding group of students and we look forward to working with them throughout their careers as they swim for Michigan."

Jurries swims multiple events, focusing on the breaststroke and individual medley. She swims for the Arizona Gold Swim Club and attends Valley Christian High School in Phoenix, Ariz. Jurries won state titles in 2013 in the 200-yard IM and 100-yard breaststroke. She won the 100-yard breaststroke all four years of her high school career. She was named the Division 2 Female Swimmer of the Year for her accomplishments. CollegeSwimming.com ranks Jurries as the No. 2 swimmer in Arizona among this recruiting class and 63rd in the nation. In 2012, she competed at the U.S. Olympic Trials and finished 102nd in the 200-meter breaststroke.

Keany is a mid-distance freestyle swimmer from Lake Oswego, Ore., who swims with the Tualatin Hills Swim Club. She is ranked the No. 6 swimmer in Oregon. At the 2013 Oregon boys and girls 6A state finals she finished third in the 500-yard freestyle and fourth in the 200-yard freestyle. She finished 21st in the 200-yard freestyle at the Speedo Championship Series Western Region in March.

Eden swims multiple events for the Edina Swim Club. She took eighth place in the 100-yard butterfly at the Minnesota Girls State High School Championships. CollegeSwimming.com ranks her as the eighth-best recruit in the state. She placed 26th in the 200-yard IM at the 2012 NCSA Junior National Championships.

Goswell is a sprint to mid-distance freestyle swimmer who hails from Sydney, Australia. She attends Baker College and swims for the Barker Aquatic Swim Club. Recently Goswell took eighth place in the 200-meter freestyle and 11th in the 100-meter freestyle at the GHSF Australian Age Championships (April 8-10, 2013).

Leary swims multiple events with a concentration on backstroke, and swims for Swim Atlanta, where she is ranked the 15th-best recruit in the state by CollegeSwimming.com. She is part of a Georgia 17-18 age group record-setting team in the 200-meter medley relay. She swam the opening backstroke leg at the 2012 Georgia Long Course Senior Championships to help achieve that record. Leary also finished sixth in the 200-meter butterfly at that meet as well. In 2012 at the DeKalb County swimming and diving championships, she took two first place finishes (200 freestyle and 100 backstroke).
