Saint Francis Leads NEC's

The 2013 NEC Swimming and Diving Championship kicked off with a bang on Wednesday evening, with a broken record and come-from-behind win in relay action.

Saint Francis U sits in first after the first night with 74 points, while Central Connecticut is second with 70. Bryant and Wagner are currently tied for third with 64, followed by Mount St. Mary's with 56, Sacred Heart with 52 and St. Francis Brooklyn.

The Red Flash's team of Becky Peer (Chelsea, Canada/Philemon Wright), Cat Rogers (Nokesville, VA/Seton School), Libby Francis (Dundee, Scotland/Grove Academy) and Danyel Johnson (Dansville, NY/Dansville) took down a one-year mark set by their own program in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:42.79. Casey Ostrander (Yarmouthport, MA/Barnstable), Julia Messina (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy), Dana Yu (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater Raritan) and Taylor Debever (Denver, CO/Regis Jesuit) of Bryant placed second in 1:43.78,while Wagner's Meghan Mendez (Export, PA/PA Cyber), Kelsey Thomas (Hammonton, NJ/Holy Spirit), Amanda Lucia (Easthampton, MA/Easthampton) and Sam Sides (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill) were third.

 In the 800 freestyle relay, Saint Francis U led most of the race, before the Central Connecticut's Allison Rasile (Branford, CT/Branford) made a huge push in the last 50 yards to give her and team members, Helene Neuhaus (Wesport, CT/Staples), Katie Lang (Monroe, CT/Masuk) and Taylor Friedmann (Berlin, CT/Berlin), the win in 7:26.30 The Red Flash's squad of Alicia Ford (Whitney Point, NY/Whitney Point), Jenny Demjanenko (New Albany, OH/Gahanna Lincoln), Elise Lofgren (Molnlylycke, Sweden/Hule) and Megan Collins (Monroeville, PA/Oakland Catholic) took second in 7:26.78. Wagner's Sarah Menendez (Land O'Lakes, FL/Whartnon), Meredith Ketchmark(Plainsboro, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro), Alexandra Cooney (Fountain Valley, CA/Fountain Valley) and Tatum Colitz (Wyomissing, PA/Wilson) earned the bronze with a time of 7:29.01.

The 2013 NEC Swimming and Diving Championships will resume tomorrow at 11:00 AM.
