Diving Lifts UMASS To Early A-10 Lead

The Spire Center didn't offer enough housing to host the NCAA Division II Championships, but after eighteen years the Atlantic 10 looks to have found a new home in Northeast Ohio.  The first night of A-10 Championships did not disappoint.  Both Richmond and St. Bonaventure got off on the right foot with wins in the 200 Medley and 800 Freestyle Relays.  Richmond is pursuing its 7th straight title while the Bonnies are hoping to snap UMASS's six-year run.  

The Minutemen have been, by far, the most successful team in the A-10 winning a conference record 14 titles, including 11 in the past 12 seasons, but the Minutemen could muster no better than fourth place while the Bonnies cruised to a pair of wins including one meet record on the first night of competition.  The Bonnies lead with 80 points followed by Xavier (68), Massachusetts (60), George Washington (58), Saint Louis (56), La Salle (54), and Fordham (52).

The Minutewomen, looking to overcome last year's 4th place finish lead with 155 points.  Much of that lead was built after UMASS swept the top four spots on the one meter board.  With a pair of relay wins however, Richmond isn't far behind with 101 points.  La Salle (86), Fordham (66), St. Bonaventure (56), Xavier (54), George Washington (50), Duquesne (36), Rhode Island (33), Butler (28), and Saint Louis (26) round out the points.

While UMASS may have diving, the Spiders will lean on 2012 MVP Mali Kobelja, who currently leads the conference in the 200 individual medley. Also leading the Spiders are junior Jessie Krebs, who is currently first in the 1,000 freestyle, senior Lauren Hines, who leads in the 200 backstroke, and freshman Kelly Yang, the leader in the 100 butterfly.
