Westminster Men, Grove City Women Claim PAC Crowns

The Westminster College men’s swimming and diving program used a solid day three effort to secure the 2013 Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships title Saturday evening at the at the James E. Longnecker Competition Pool in Grove City.
 
The conference title was Westminster’s first since 2007 and snapped Grove City’s five-year run at the championship event. The Titans and 28th year head coach Rob Klamut had finished second at the conference championship meet in each of the last five seasons.
 
The 2013 PAC Swimming and Diving Championships were held in conjunction with Grove City’s 23rd annual James E. Longnecker Swimming and Diving Invitational and the seventh annual Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championships at the James E. Longnecker Competition Pool. The 2013 championships mark the 28th anniversary of the PAC Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships.
 
The Titans tallied 741 total points in the three-day event, just 13 points ahead of second-place Grove City (728). Washington & Jefferson College finished in third place (422), followed by Saint Vincent College in fourth place (362) and Bethany College in fifth place (34).
 
Westminster sophomore Steven Brooks was named the PAC’s Most Valuable Performer as a swimmer after claiming both the 100 and 200 backstroke titles. He won the 200 backstroke in Saturday’s session with a time of 1:52.43, surpassing the NCAA B cut minimum while establishing a new Longnecker Competition Pool record.
 
The PAC Most Valuable Performer for a diver award went to W&J senior John Szott. Szott finished first in Saturday’s three-meter competition (388.90) as well as Thursday’s one-meter event (395.85).
 
The PAC Swimming Coach of the Year was awarded to Klamut while the PAC Diving Coach of the Year award was given to W&J’s Vic Galati.
 
Grove City junior David Bossert got Saturday’s evening session underway with a victory in the 1,650 free, touching in a time of 16:28.48.
 
Wolverine senior Eric Fairchild swam a NCAA B cut time in the 100 free with a time of 45.85.
 
Westminster freshman Matthew Baurle was first in the 200 back with a time of 2:04.31, surpassing the NCAA B cut minimum, while Titan senior Alan Nedley registered a winning time of 1:54.03 in the 200 butterfly.
 
Grove City’s 400 free relay (Jordan Delhi, Ian Smyth, CP Delhi, Fairchild) claimed first with a time of 3:09.02.
 


The Grove City College women’s swimming and diving program captured the 2013 Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships team title Saturday evening at the at the James E. Longnecker Competition Pool in Grove City.
 
Grove City raised the team championship trophy in 2013 for the PAC-leading 11th time since claiming its first conference swimming and diving crown in 1989.

The Wolverines totaled 926 points in the three-day event, followed by Westminster College in second place with 775 points, Saint Vincent College in third place (539), Washington & Jefferson College in fourth place (400), Chatham University in fifth place (179) and Bethany College in sixth place (173).
 
Grove City senior Angela Palumbo was voted the conference's Most Valuable Performer for a swimmer after sweeping the sprint events. On Saturday Palumbo claimed the 100 free with a NCAA B cut time of 51.66.
 
The league’s Most Valuable Performer award for a diver went to Washington & Jefferson sophomore Jennifer Suder, who was the runner-up in Saturday’s one-meter event (358.45). Suder captured the three-meter championship (391.70) on Thursday evening.
 
Saint Vincent’s Josh Gurekovich was tabbed the Women’s Swimming Coach of the Year after helping guide his Bearcats to a third-place showing, while Washington & Jefferson’s Vic Galati was named the Women’s Diving Coach of the Year after assisting Suder in her efforts at the 2013 championships.
 
Grove City freshman Megan Bilko starting Saturday’s evening session off with a victory in the 1,650 free with her conference- and pool-record time of 17 minutes, 20.59 seconds. Bilko’s time also surpassed the NCAA B cut qualifying standard.
 
Sophomore Lauren Cassano captured the 200 backstroke in an NCAA B cut time of 2:06.44 while junior Kaley Hess won the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:27.20.
 
Senior Kait Riesmeyer won the 200 butterfly with a NCAA B cut time of 2:06.43.
 
The 400 free relay (Palumbo, Riesmeyer, Jenny Ryan, Tori Baker) closed the meet by winning the 400 free relay in a NCAA B cut time of 3:30.06.
