St. Mary's (Md.) Men Compete at York Triangular

Junior captain Thor Petersen (Germantown, Md./Northwest) led the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's swim team in competition at a tri-meet hosted by York College of Pennsylvania Saturday afternoon, featuring York, St. Mary's, Dickinson College and Susquehanna University.  Petersen claimed three gold medals on the day.
 
Petersen started his winning in the 1000 freestyle as he captured the event in 10:31.16 while first-year Grant Burgess (Fallston, Md./Fallston) finished third in the event in 10:32.80.  Petersen followed that up with a first-place finish in the 200 butterfly in 2:03.17.  Sophomore Bobby Witkop (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) recorded a fifth-place finish in the 200 fly in 2:11.34.
 
Petersen's last win came in the 500 freestyle as he touched the wall first in 5:03.94 while Burgess again placed third behind Petersen in 5:07.85.
 
The Seahawks took third in the 400 medley relay in 3:49.35 behind the efforts of sophomore Dylan Cope (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral), junior Jimmy Forest (Columbia, Md./Atholton), Witkop and first-year Michael Speer (Springfield, Va./West Springfield).
 
Cope claimed a fourth-place finish in the 200 individual medley in 2:08.72 while senior Chris Coghill (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) came in sixth in 2:11.50.  Speer picked up a fourth-place finish in the 100 freestyle in 51.13 while first-year Zach Lilley (Myersville, Md./Middletown) finished ninth in 51.86.
 
St. Mary's picked up another fourth-place finish in the 200 breaststroke as Coghill touched the wall in 2:23.83 while sophomore Jackson Holden (Valley Lee, Md./Great Mills) finished ninth in 2:29.34.  Cope took fifth in the 200 backstroke in 2:08.83 while Forest came in eighth in 2:12.49.
 
The Seahawks posted fifth-place finish in the 400 free relay in 3:27.64 as Burgess, Lilley, junior Jon Sheldon (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) and Speer swam on the relay.
 
Lilley was the team's top finisher in the 50 freestyle as he came in sixth in 22.93 while Forest was ninth in 23.22.  Witkop claimed a seventh-place finish in the 200 freestyle in 1:55.55 while Holden took ninth in 1:57.15.
 
The Seahawks will be back in action next Saturday, November 17 when St. Mary's welcomes McDaniel College to the Aquatics Center at the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center for a non-conference meet at 1:00 p.m.




The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's swim team captured four events Saturday afternoon as the Seahawks (8-0, 2-0 CAC) went unbeaten at the quad meet hosted by York College of Pennsylvania.  The quad meet featured St. Mary's, York, Dickinson College and Susquehanna University.
 
St. Mary's posted a 159-44 Capital Athletic Conference victory over York followed by non-conference wins over Dickinson, 115-89, and Susquehanna, 106-98.  Senior captain Kelly Heyde (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) claimed a pair of first-place finishes while sophomores Brooke Raab (Parkton, Md./Hereford) and Hannah Edler (Frederick, Md./Urbana) each won one event.
 
Heyde touched the wall first in the 1000 freestyle in 10:51.57 while junior captain Erin O'Connor (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) came in fourth in 11:11.22.  Heyde also notched a gold medal in the 200 individual medley in 2:14.78 while Raab was third in 2:18.96.  Heyde finished her afternoon with a second-place finish in the 200 butterfly in 2:12.29 while senior Daisy Smith (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) finished seventh in 2:27.85.
 
Edler's gold medal came in the 50 freestyle as she touched the wall first in 25.97 while sophomore Kelsey Abernathy (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) placed fourth in 26.53.  Raab was the first swimmer to touch the wall in the 200 breaststroke as she finished the event in 2:33.76 while O'Connor took third less than two seconds later (2:35.38).
 
First-year Zoe McIlmail (Frederick, Md./Urbana) claimed a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle in 2:01.21 while fellow classmate Cara Machlin (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) placed fourth in 2:02.63.  First-year Karlie Straight (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur) finished second in the 200 backstroke in 2:19.44 while McIlmail took sixth in 2:22.26.
 
Behind the efforts of sophomore Colleen Walls (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll), Raab, Abernathy, and McIlmail, the Seahawks took second in the 400 medley relay in 4:15.69.  Abernathy went third in the 100 freestyle in 57.57 while senior Hattie Schiavone (Winchester, Va./John Handley) was fifth in 57.91.
 
Sophomore Elaina Kohles (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) notched a third-place finish in the 500 freestyle in 5:26.88 followed by Machlin in fourth in 5:29.62 and O'Connor in fifth in 5:31.17.  St. Mary's tallied a third-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:52.38 as Machlin, Kohles, Edler, and Schiavone swam on the relay.
 
The Seahawks will be back in action on Saturday, November 17 when St. Mary's welcomes McDaniel College to the Aquatics Center at the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center for a non-conference meet at 1:00 pm.
