Denver Sweeps Idaho, Colorado School of Mines

The University of Denver swept Saturday’s meet at El Pomar Natatorium. The Pioneer women topped Western Athletic Conference foe Idaho 173-125 and also defeated Colorado School of Mines 228-43. The Denver men defeated sole opponent Colorado School of Mines 164-119.

Senior Alex Suppan (Burlington, Vt.) led the way for the Pioneer women, finishing first overall in both the 200 Butterfly (2:04.27) and the 400 IM (4:27.57). The Burlington, Vt., native also swam the leadoff leg on Denver’s first-place 400 Medley Relay team.

Junior Jaclyn Best (Boulder, Colo.) also tallied a pair of individual victories. Best topped all competitors in the 1,000 Freestyle with a time of 10:38.12 and the 500 Freestyle with a time of 5:13.02.

“It was good to see one of our conference opponents and to get a home win,” said head coach Brian Schrader. “Alex Suppan had outstanding swims in the 400 IM and the 200 Fly. Jaclyn Best is playing a good solid role for us, and it’s fun to watch her race those distance events.”

The Pioneers tallied four 1-2-3 finishes on the women’s side. The first came in the 100 Backstroke where senior Kirsten Milberg (Littleton, Colo.) (58.18) took first, followed by sophomore Bridgette McNally (Lone Tree, Colo.)  (58.33) and freshman Zoe Huddleston (Rothschild, Wis.) (59.49). Denver also took the top-three spots in the 200 Backstroke, with sophomore Samantha Corea (Vancouver, British Columbia) leading the way with a time of 2:01.03, and Huddleston (2:08.80) and junior Gretchen Cohen (Centennial, Colo.) (2:10.04) finishing second and third, respectively.

Denver swept the first three spots in the 500 Freestlye as well, with Best leading the way. She was followed by senior Tia Totura (Castle Rock, Colo.) (5:18.41) and freshman Tyra Rooney (Calgary, Alberta) (5:19.39). The Pioneers final sweep came in the 400 IM, where Suppan was followed by Milberg (4:35.81) and freshman Madeline Eyolfson (Boise, Idaho) (4:43.49).

Eyolfson also took first in the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:06.48, while McNally finished first in the 200 Breaststroke with a time of 2:23.63.

The relay team of Suppan, Eyolfson, Corea and sophomore Drew Matthews (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) recorded a victory in the 400 Medley Relay with a time of 3:53.58.

On the men’s side, junior Kyle Milberg (Littleton, Colo.) topped the Pioneers with two individual victories, recording first-place finishes in the 50 Freestyle (21.43) and the 200 Backstroke (1:48.46).

“I think we were off in a few events, but overall we did pretty well on the men’s side,” Schrader said. “Kyle’s 200 Back was really strong, and he had a great meet. It was good to see Robert Barrett and Jeremiah Zgliczynski perform well.”

The Denver men tallied 1-2-3 finishes in five individual events on the day.

Sophomore Jeremiah Zgliczynski (Littleton, Colo.) took first in the 1,000 Freestyle (9:53.35) followed by junior Matt Absher (Knoxville, Tenn.) (9:58.69) and senior Jorge Palma (Caracas, Venezuela) (10:18.66). Freshmen Andrew Torres (Arvada, Colo.) and Dylan Bunch (Boulder City, Nev.), and sophomore Willy Van Dehy (Boulder, Colo.) finished first, second and third in the 200 Freestyle, with times of 1:44.53, 1:45.63 and 1:47.05, respectively.

Seniors Jeff Cox (Alpharetta, Ga.) (53.20) and Mark Maguire (Denver, Colo.) (53.52), and junior Ryan Holly (Pheoniz, Ariz.) (55.39) took the top-three spots in the 100 Backstroke, while senior Robert Barrett (Scottsdale, Ariz.) (1:53.46), sophomore Eric Anderson (Calgary, Alberta) (1:59.45) and senior Andy Lee (Monroe, La.)(2:01.38) swept the 200 Butterfly. Milberg, junior Doug Mackenzie (Silver Spring, Md.) (21.72) and senior Cole Worsley (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) (21.80) swept the 50 Freestyle.

MacKenzie also took first in the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:00.28, and the Pioneers recorded a win in the 400 Medley Relay with the team of Holly, junior Tanner Krall (Pueblo, Colo.), Worsley and Maguire.

On the diving board, the Denver men swept the three-meter dive, as sophomores Ross Edfort (Somerset, N.J.) and Simon Latimer (Westminster, Colo.) finished first and second with scores of 329.35 and 251.95, respectively. Freshman Alex Hoffner-Heinike (Greeley, Colo.) took third with a score of 229.80.

Edfort also finished first in the one-meter dive with a score of 281.90.

“We’re really starting to see some things come together,” said head diving coach Aaron D’Addario. “The freshmen are starting to do some bigger dives, and they’re really starting to look better on the boards. Things are starting to come around at the end of the fall, and we’re working hard and moving in the right direction.”

The Pioneers will return to action Nov. 30 at the Iowa Invite.
