While the Maryland swimming teams are no longer, it appears the Maryland coaches are moving on. Sean Schimmel is the latest Terp to land on his feet, landing the women's head coaching position at Arkansas. His hiring follows John Pontz's hiring at Missouri and Matt Emmert moving onto Roger Williams University.
Schimmel enjoyed success with the Terrapins especially on the women's side. Before being slated for elimination, the Terp women took fourth in the ACC Championships and 22nd at NCAA's. Schimmel will have a couple of distance studs in his stable in Chelsea Franklin and Nicole Menzel. Those two helped the Razorbacks overtake both Alabama and South Carolina on the final day of SEC's to finish sixth.
Prior to arriving at Maryland, Schimmel was associate head coach at LSU, working on the staff of Adam Schmitt as the recruiting coordinator. He helped the men's and women's teams place at NCAA Championships both years, with the women's team earning a 17th place finish in 2007.
Prior to his joining the LSU staff, Schimmel spent seven seasons as an assistant men's coach at Harvard, where he also led recruiting efforts for head coach Tim Murphy.
Schimmel is married to the former Tricia Starr, and the couple has two daughters, Peyton Lilly and Dillan Rose.
