Washington & Jefferson Sweeps Bethany and Franciscan

Washington & Jefferson College seniors Bethany Haver (Akron, Ohio/Harvey S. Firestone) and Abbey Woodward (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) both qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships Wednesday night during the Presidents’ double-dual meet sweep of Bethany and Franciscan at the Henry Memorial Natatorium. 

The Presidents’ women (8-0, 4-0 PAC) have now won 23 consecutive dual meets heading into Saturday’s showdown with Grove City.  W&J defeated Bethany 64-23 and Franciscan 64-33.

On the men’s side, Washington & Jefferson (3-3, 2-1 PAC) posted a 41-23 victory over Bethany. 

Haver, a two-time NCAA All-American, recorded an 11-dive total of 428.00 points to provisionally qualify for the national championships on the 1-meter board, while Woodward accumulated 412.10 points.

Senior C.J. Corcoran (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) claimed two events, winning the 200 (2:02.46) and 500 (5:37.67) freestyle events, while classmate Ellie Tecza (Pittsburgh, Pa./Schenley) was also a part of two wins.  She helped the 200 medley relay record a time of 1:59.30, while claiming the 50 freestyle (26.44).  

On the men’s side, freshman Anthony Picozzi (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) led the Presidents with a victory in the 50 freestyle (23.97).  Senior Jonathan Weeks (Donora, Pa./Ringgold), this week’s PAC Swimmer of the Week, won the 200 freestyle (1:54.27), while classmate Keyton Kalakewich (Edwards, Colo./Charleroi) touched first in the 100 freestyle (50.41).  

The Presidents and Wolverines will battle Saturday at 1:00 pm in Grove City, Pa.
