Washington and Jefferson Splits With Wheeling Jesuit

The Washington and Jefferson College women’s swimming & diving team concluded its 2011-12 dual-meet schedule with an 11-1 record as the Presidents split with Wheeling Jesuit Saturday in West Virginia.

The W&J women collected a 155-102 victory, while the Cardinal men earned the split with a 134-123 win over the Presidents’ men (4-6).

The women’s squad was led by freshman Jessica Sweitzer (Laurel, Md./Seton Keough), who won four events. Sweitzer claimed the 50 (25.36), 100 (54.75) and 200 (2:01.14) freestyles, while also leading the 200 medley relay (1:53.70) to a win in the opening race.

Senior C.J. Corcoran (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) joined Sweitzer with a quartet of victories. She also swam on the 200 medley relay before touching first in the 50 (32.42) and 100 (1:10.66) breaststroke and 100 IM (1:02.77) events.

Freshman Charlotte Lima (Brooklyn, N.Y./Choate Rosemary Hall) and senior Brittany Vogel (Butler, Pa./Butler) were triple winners. Both swam on the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:44.15) and then Lima claimed the 50 (29.08) and 100 (1:02.06) backstroke events. Vogel was the winner in the 500 (5:21.60) and 1000 (11:00.26) freestyles.

Senior Andy Rish (North East, Pa./Cathedral Prep) was the lone double winner for the Presidents’ men. He placed first in the 50 butterfly (26.03) and 100 IM (58.07).

W&J will now have two weeks off to prepare for the 2012 Presidents’ Athletic Conference Championships which will be hosted by Grove City from Feb. 15-18.
