College of Charleston Men, Florida Gulf Coast Women Retain Leads at CCSA's

Following day two of the 2012 Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) swimming and diving championships, College of Charleston men continue to lead the five team field on Friday, Feb. 17 with 637.5 points at the Gabrielsen Natatorium on the campus of University of Georgia.

College of Charleston leads by 46 points over Davidson College, who has 591.5 points. Gardner-Webb is in third place with 481.5 points, while fourth-place VMI has 251.5 points. Howard rounds out the field with 170 points.

Davidson’s Geoff Peitz, Drew Onken, Joe Burquist and Wills Cooper started off the second night of finals winning the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:29.98. Gardner-Webb’s Colin James, Drew Ellwanger, DJ Hughes and Cole Hickey followed in second, clocking 1:30.20 and College of Charleston’s Jackson Marine, Brantley Reynolds, Chris Verboncoeur and Greg Karel took third-place with a time of 1:30.34.

Onken broke his own 400-yard IM CCSA record for the second-straight year and made the "B" cut with a time of 3:47.38. College of Charleston’s Pablo Ortiz took second in the event with a time of 4:04.07 and Gardner-Webb’s Tyler Nuss followed in third with a time of 4:06.13.

In a very close 100-yard butterfly, Davidson’s Will Fox took the win with a time of 49.61, just one-tenth of a second ahead of College of Charleston’s Verboncoeur who clocked in at 49.71. Davidson College rounded out the top three with Joe Burquist touching the wall at 50.15.

Davidson’s Curtis Chaney took home the gold in the 200-yard freestyle and made the "B" cut standard with a time of 1:37.84, while teammate Dylan Ludwick finished third with a time of 1:39.88. College of Charleston’s Matthew Sherrier placed second, clocking in at 1:38.97.

Ellwanger won Gardner-Webb’s first event of the night in the 100-yard breaststroke, clocking in at 55.80. In second-place was College of Charleston’s Reynolds with a time of 56.63, edging Gardner-Webb’s Collin Burchins by one-hundredth of a second (56.64).

Davidson’s Peitz took first-place in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 48.69, while Marine of College of Charleston clocked in at 49.88 for second-place. Gardner-Webb’s took home the bronze with a time of 50.71.

On the men’s 1-meter board, College of Charleston’s Peter Gibbons won for the second-straight year with a score of 278.70, while teammate Michael Topitzer took second with a scoreof 206.20. Nate Myers of VMI placed third with a score of 201.80.

In the last event of the night, Davidson’s Onken, Ben Stewart-Bates, Chaney and Ludwick won the 800-ard freestyle relay with a time of 6:40.75, while College of Charleston’s David Sherrier, Joshua Shaffer, Verboncoeur and Matthew Sherrier followed in second with a time of 6:46.78. Gardner-Webb’s Hughes, Woods, Sam Wilson and Taft Kallam finished in third, clocking in at 6:56.93.

Florida Gulf Coast has had someone place in every event, while winning four events. Liberty follows with 367.5 points, while Georgia Southern is behind in third with 298.5 points. Gardner-Webb is fourth with 243 points and North Florida is in fifth with 236 points. Davidson College is in sixth with 223, College of Charleston is in seventh with 178 and Campbell is in eighth with 134. Rounding out the field is Radford with 94, Howard with 69, VMI with 52 and North Carolina A&T with 44.

Florida Gulf Coast continued to impress in the first event of the night, with Emma Svensson, Dani Beaubrun, Eva Lehtonen and Christina Tanninen winning the 200-yard medley relay and earning a "B" cut with a time of 1:40.10. Liberty’s Brye Ravettine, Erin Curry, Marley Cripe and Cori Gary followed in second with a time of 1:43.75 and Gardner-Webb’s Joann Filipov, Kristen Bates, Megan Heller and Elaina Lanson were third, clocking 1:45.37.

In the400-yard IM, CJay Wiley of Gardner-Webb took first with a time of 4:23.63, while FGCU’s Lehtonen clocked in second at 4:24.26 and Sara Evans of North Florida placed third at 4:24.69.

Liberty’s Bethany Wakeley took home the gold in the 100-yard butterfly, clocking in at 54.77. FGCU rounded out the top three with Danielle Butler clocking in at 55.19 for second and Alessandra Cianci taking third-place with 56.00.

Florida Gulf Coast took first and third in the 200-yard freestyle, with Leah Daniel winning with a time of 1:50.20 and Jessie Porter taking third with 1:51.24. Gardner-Webb’s Jenna Ballinger finished in second-place with 1:50.91.

The top three finishers of the 100-yard breaststroke all earned "B" cut times, with Georgia Southern’s Bates taking first with a time of 1:02.30, and Gardner-Webb’s Charity Byrum coming in a close second with a time of 1:02.37. Beaubrun of FGCU rounded out the top three with a time of 1:02.84.

In the 100-yard backstroke, the Eagles took first and earned a "B" cut with Svensson clocking in at 54.01. Liberty rounded out the top three with Ravettine taking second and earning a"B" cut with a time of 54.59, and Emily Duff placing third with a time of 56.65.

The Eagles ended the day by winning the 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 7:24.20, followed by Liberty’s Margaret Riel, Sarah McCorkle, Wakeley and Duff who finished with a time of 7:30.74. North Florida’s Christine Kemp, Bridget Woods, Maria Bernard and Natalie McCallum placed third with a time of 7:33.18.

The final day of the CCSA Championship will begin Saturday, Feb. 18 at 10:00am, starting with the 200-yard backstroke trials. The finals will start at 6:00pm with the 1,650-yard freestyle.
