A&M Cooks Rice

The Texas A&M women’s swimming and diving team improved their undefeated record to 5-0 this weekend after a dominating performance at Rice University.  The Aggies won 12 of 14 possible events at the dual meet for a 168-94 victory.

The women’s squad made a big statement setting nine new pool records.  The pool records broken were the 100 free by Sammie Bosma in 50.77, 1000 free by Sarah Henry in 9:45.50, the 500 free by Sarah Henry in 4:53.23, the 100 breast by Breeja Larson in 1:00.47 also an NCAA ‘B’ cut, the 100 fly by Caroline McElhany in 54.72, the 200 fly by Cammile Adams in 2:00.54, and the 400 IM by Cammile Adams in 4:24.77.  Both of the two relays the Aggies swam were also pool records, the 400 free relay in 3:27.01 by Kelli Benjamin, Sarah Henry, Breeja Larson, and Sammie Bosma and the 200 medley relay swam in 1:42.58 by Tess Simpson, Breeja Larson, Caroline McElhany, and Liliana Ibanez.

The shining swimmer of the meet was junior Caroline McElhany with three first place finishes.  McElhany swam a 56.66 in the 100 back and a 54.72 in the 100 fly, along with assisting in the first place 200 medley relay.

“We had a number of good performances, Caroline McElhany won three events, and it’s always good to do that. Sarah Henry’s 1000 free was a really really good swim”, said Head Coach Steve Bultman about the teams performance.

Sophomore Sarah Henry came in first place in the 1000 free under ten minutes with an impressive time of 9:45.50. Henry’s pace was so impressive that she set a new pool record for the 500 free in the first half of her swim.

Olympian Cammile Adams had a solid day with two first place finishes in the 200 fly with 2:00.54 and the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:24.77 both of which were new pool records.

With this meet, the Texas A&M swimming and diving team finishes their first semester undefeated and with dozens of new records. Aggies will resume competition on January 12 with a home meet against the Auburn Tigers.

Rice duo of sophomore Erin Flanigan and senior Stephanie Wei both won individual events, but No. 1 ranked Texas A&M claimed a 168-94 dual meet victory over the Owls' swim team Saturday afternoon at the Rice Competition Pool in Houston.

Texas A&M won 12 of the 14 events Saturday, as well as set nine new pool records, to remain undefeated in meets this season. The Aggies are ranked by CollegeSwimming.com as the No. 1 women's team in the nation.

The Owls' top finishers were Wei and Flanigan, who claimed wins in the 200-yard backstroke and 500-freestyle, respectively. Flanigan swam a season-best 4:54.14 to touch first in the 500 by sixth-tenths of second, the fastest mark by an Owl in the team's home pool. The sophomore from Austin was also the Owls' top finisher in the 200-butterfly with a 2:03.92 to take third.

Wei was one of four Rice seniors making their final appearance in the home meet and went out in style with a victory in the 200-backstroke (2:04.77). The standout from Cupertino, Calif., held off an Aggie charge to win the race by 11 one-hundredths of a second.

Three different Owls posted two second place finishes each. Sophomore Casey Clark was second in the 100-butterfly (55.56) and 200-freestyle (1:50.90). Junior sprinter Chelsea Fong was second in the 50- (23.87) and 100-freestyle (52.31). Sophomore Madison Livingston went a steady 10:19.83 for second overall in her first-career attempt at the 1,000-free. She then came back with a 2:24.08 for a second place in the 200-breaststroke.

The dual meet was Rice's last before the University begins in Final Exams period for the fall semester. The Owl swimmers next return to action at the Incarnate Word University Invitational, a multi-team/multi-day meet in San Antonio on Dec. 15-17.
