Washington College Takes Third, Ninth at Franklin & Marshall Invite

The Washington College men's swim team captured nine medals - including three golds - while finishing third of seven teams overall at the Franklin & Marshall Invitational, held Friday, yesterday, and today. FreshmanLucas Morgan (Allendale, NJ/Northern Highlands Regional) also broke the school record in the 1650 freestyle at the meet.

Sophomore Greg Lee (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield Memorial) won the 100 butterfly in a Washington College season-best 52.47. In the 200 butterfly, Lee took the bronze with a WC season-best time of 2:00.13.

Washington won the 400 medley relay in a WC season-best time of 3:37.02. Freshman Charles Logan (Durham, NC/Riverside), freshman Eric Burcin(Bethlehem, PA/Liberty), Lee, and sophomore Austin Yocum (Lebanon, PA/Cedar Crest) swam the event for the Shoremen.

Logan, Burcin, Lee and freshman Sean Stevens (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield Memorial) won the 200 medley relay for the Shoremen in a WC season-best time of 1:37.20.

Morgan finished second in the 400 individual medley in a WC season-best time of 4:12.83 to become the Shoremen's second-fastest swimmer ever in that event. In the 200 individual medley, Morgan captured the bronze in 2:00.51 to become the Shoremen's sixth-fastest swimmer ever in that event. He broke the school record in the 1650 freestyle with a fifth-place finish in 16:53.82. During that race, he also swam a 10:09.07 1000 freestyle time, making him the Shoremen's second-fastest swimmer ever in that event. Morgan swam a meet-best and WC season-best 2:12.96 as an exhibition entrant in the 200 breaststroke preliminaries.  That time made him the school's third-fastest swimmer ever in that event. He also swam a WC season-best 4:54.16 as an exhibition entrant in the 500 freestyle, lowering his own eighth-fastest time in school history in the event.

The Shoremen's 200 freestyle relay team of Lee, Yocum, Burcin, and Stevens captured bronze in a WC season-best time of 1:28.63

Yocum added a bronze medal in the 200 freestyle in a WC season-best 1:46.55 to become the Shoremen's fourth-fastest swimmer ever in that event. He was also fourth in the 500 freestyle in 4:57.44 and ninth in the 1650 freestyle in 17:32.54.

Burcin won bronze in the 200 breaststroke in 2:15.60 after swimming a WC season-best 2:14.40 in the preliminaries to become the Shoremen's sixth-fastest swimmer ever in that event. He took fourth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:01.89 after swimming a WC season-best 1:01.46 in the preliminaries to become the Shoremen's sixth-fastest swimmer ever in that event. He was also eighth in the 50 freestyle in 22.97.

Logan placed sixth in the 200 backstroke in a WC season-best 2:03.76 to become the Shoremen's ninth-fastest swimmer ever in that event and seventh in the 100 backstroke in 56.34 after swimming a 55.69 in the preliminaries to lower his own ninth-fastest time in school history.  In the 100 butterfly, Logan finished eighth in 55.63.

Stevens placed sixth in the 50 freestyle in 22.44 after swimming a WC season-best 22.38 in the preliminaries. He was also ninth in the 100 freestyle (49.24) and 12th in the 200 freestyle (1:51.74).

Sophomore Steven Bilinski (Swarthmore, PA/Strath Haven) placed seventh in the 200 butterfly in 2:10.03, while freshman Chris Kelly (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) was 10th in the 200 butterfly in 2:10.03 and 16th in the 100 butterfly in 57.13.

Junior Robert Mix (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown East) was 12th in the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.26, 14th in the 200 breaststroke in 2:31.73, and 15th in the 1650 freestyle in 18:11.46. Junior Tad Derrick (Virginia Beach, VA/First Colonial) placed 13th in the 400 individual medley in 5:02.66 and 15th in the 200 breaststroke in 2:35.53, while freshman DJ Bradshaw (Reisterstown, MD/Calvert Hall) was 14th in the 100 backstroke in 1:00.10 and 15th in the 200 backstroke in 2:13.47.

In addition to their three relay medals, Washington also placed fifth in the other two relay events at the meet. Lee, Yocum, Morgan, and Stevens were fifth in the 800 freestyle relay in 7:23.86, while Stevens, Yocum, Burcin, and Lee were fifth in the 400 freestyle relay in a WC season-best 3:17.02.

Host Franklin & Marshall finished fifth in the men's team standings at the meet. Ramapo was second. The Shoremen took third by 1.5 points over fourth-place Susquehanna, finishing with 511 points to the Crusaders' 509.5. St. Mary's was fifth, McDaniel sixth, and Widener seventh.

The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. non-conference home meet against Widener.



The Washington College women's swim team competed at the Franklin & Marshall Invitation Friday, yesterday, and today. The Shorewomen finished ninth of nine teams in the final team standings.

Junior Ellie Miskiel (Gaithersburg, MD/Quince Orchard) captured the silver medal in the 200 breaststroke for the Shorewomen with a time of 2:28.30. She swam a Washington College season-best time of 2:27.74 in the preliminaries to improve upon her own third-fastest time in school history. She was also fourth in the 100 breaststroke in a WC season-best 1:09.01 to better her own sixth-fastest time in school history. She also led off Washington's 800 freestyle relay team with a WC season-best 2:01.40 in the 200 freestyle to become the school's 10th-fastest swimmer ever in that event, led off the 200 freestyle relay with a WC season-best 25.72 50 freestyle time, and led off the 400 freestyle relay with a WC season-best 55.98 100 freestyle time.

Junior Carly Ogren (Burke, VA/Lake Braddock) placed sixth in the 500 freestyle for the Shorewomen in a WC season-best 5:25.29. She was 12th in both the 200 freestyle (a WC season-best 2:02.04) and the 50 freestyle (matching Miskiel's WC season-best 25.72).

Senior Sarah Sykes (Haworth, NJ/Northern Valley-Demarest) placed seventh in the 200 butterfly in 2:23.60 after swimming a WC season-best 2:23.50 in the preliminaries. In the preliminaries of the 100 butterfly, she swam a WC season-best 1:06.09.

Sophomore Alicia Howard (Wilmington, DE/Charter School of Wilmington) scored points in both backstroke events for Washington, placing eighth in the 200 backstroke in 2:21.95 after swimming a WC season-best 2:19.32 in the preliminaries and 16th in the 100 backstroke in 1:05.71. She also led off the 400 medley relay with a WC season-best 1:04.46 100 backstroke leg.

Freshman Julianna Fritzinger (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion Area) placed 10th in the 200 breaststroke in 2:35.37 to become the Shorewomen's 10th-fastest swimmer ever in that event. She was also 16th in the 100 breaststroke in 1:13.77 and swam a WC season-best 5:04.07 in the preliminaries of the 400 individual medley.

Senior Allison Kvien (Mechanicsville, MD/Chopticon) took 12th in the 200 breaststroke in 2:37.40 and 15th in the 1650 freestyle in 19:32.58.

Washington's top relay finish came in the 200 freestyle relay where Miskiel, Howard, Sykes, and Ogren took eighth place in a Washington College season-best 1:43.80.

Division II California University (PA) finished first in the women's team standings at the meet. Host Franklin & Marshall was second, St. Mary's third, Susquehanna fourth, Division II Kutztown fifth, Widener sixth, Ramapo seventh, and McDaniel eighth.

The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. non-conference home meet against Widener.


St. Mary's (Md.) Women

The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's swim team notched their highest-ever finish at the annual, three-day Franklin & Marshall College Invitational this past weekend.  The Seahawks notched a third-place finish with 506 points in the nine-team field, besting Division II Kutztown University by 87 points.
 
Senior captain Kelly Heyde (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) highlighted the weekend with an NCAA provisional time as well as a school record.
 
FRIDAY SESSION
The Seahawks were first in the team standings after the first two events, the 200 freestyle relay and the 1650 freestyle, edging Division II California University of Pennsylvania and host Franklin & Marshall by two points.
 
The foursome of sophomore Hannah Edler (Frederick, Md./Urbana), Heyde, first-year Zoe McIlmail (Frederick, Md./Urbana), and sophomore Kelsey Abernathy (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) combined for a fifth-place finish in the 200 free relay in 1:41.88.
 
Junior Stefania D'Ambrosio (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase), sophomore Brooke Raab (Parkton, Md./Hereford), first-year Cara Machlin (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson), and senior Hattie Schiavone (Winchester, Va./John Handley) claimed a 10th-place finish in 1:44.38.
 
Junior captain Erin O'Connor (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) led St. Mary's in the 1650 free with a fifth-place finish in 18:17.53 while sophomore Elaina Kohles (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) placed eighth in 18:26.12.  Junior Hanna Rizkallah (Frederick, Md./Urbana) and senior Emma Sullivan (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) also scored for the Seahawks in this event with 11th- (19:09.72) and 12th-place (19:21.52) finishes, respectively.
 
SATURDAY SESSION
After eight more events on Saturday, St. Mary's was third in the team standings behind second-place F&M by just one point.
 
Heyde captured the 400 individual medley with an NCAA provisional time of 4:32.95 while Raab took sixth in the event in 4:47.88.  Kohles claimed top honors in the consolation finals with a ninth-place finish in 4:48.77 while O'Connor placed 10th in 4:49.64.  Senior Daisy Smith (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) also scored for the team with a 15th-place finish in 5:00.62.
 
St. Mary's finished third in the 800 free relay in 8:05.59 behind the efforts of McIlmail, Kohles, Raab, and Heyde while the foursome of Machlin, O'Connor, Abernathy, and Schiavone placed eighth in 8:21.55.
 
Abernathy took fourth in the 100 butterfly in 1:01.17 while Schiavone and Machlin were 11th (1:02.46) and 12th (1:02.63), respectively.  Senior Joanna Purich (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) also notched points in the event with a 15th-place finish in 1:03.71.
 
McIlmail posted a sixth-place finish in the 200 freestyle in 1:59.53 while Rizkallah came in 16th in 2:06.48.  Raab picked up a sixth-place finish in the 200 breaststroke in 2:32.71.  Edler and D'Ambrosio scored for the Seahawks in the 50 freestyle with 10th (25.64) and 11th-place (25.70) finishes, respectively.
 
SUNDAY SESSION
Heyde finished second in the 200 individual medley in 2:09.82 while Abernathy came up with a 10th-place finish in 2:17.97.
 
Heyde added to her NCAA 'B' cut in the 400 IM with a school record time in the 100 breaststroke.  She finished third in the event in 1:07.61, which surpassed her own record of 1:08.15 set in the morning's preliminaries.  Her preliminary time broke fellow teammate's, Chelsea Gulliver (Frederick, Md./Urbana), record of 1:08.28 set at the 2011 Capital Athletic Conference championship meet.
 
O'Connor paced the Seahawks in the 500 freestyle with a fourth-place finish in 5:22.13 while Kohles came in 10th in 5:22.88.  Machlin notched a 12th-place finish in 5:26.55 while Rizkallah tallied a 15th-place finish in the event in 5:29.29.
 
First-year Karlie Straight (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur) finished fourth in the 200 backstroke in 2:15.79 while McIlmail took 10th in 2:18.83.  Sophomore Colleen Walls (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) picked up a 15th-place finish in 2:21.06.
 
McIlmail, Abernathy, Schiavone, and Heyde joined forces for a fourth-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:43.96 while the team of D'Ambrosio, Raab, O'Connor, and Kohles placed 11th in 3:52.26.
 
Raab came in sixth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.72 while D'Ambrosio captured the consolation finals with a ninth-place finish in 1:10.26.  Purich led the team in the 200 butterfly with a sixth-place finish in 2:23.44 while Schiavone was the top Seahawk finisher in the 100 freestyle with an 11th-place finish in 56.22.
 
The Seahawks will now be idle until January 10, 2013 when St. Mary's hosts University of Mary Washington in Capital Athletic Conference action at 4:00 pm.  In the meantime, the Seahawks will head south to Florida for their winter training trip between December 30 and January 8.


St. Mary's (Md.) Men

The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's swim team tallied a fifth-place finish at the three-day, annual Franklin & Marshall College Invitational this past weekend.  The Seahawks notched 391 points in the seven-team field, beating out McDaniel College and Widener University.
 
Sophomore Dylan Cope (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral) highlighted the weekend for the Seahawks with his first-place finish Sunday in the 200 backstroke in 1:56.98.
 
FRIDAY SESSION
Following the 200 freestyle relay and the 1650 freestyle events, St. Mary's was fifth in the team standings besting Susquehanna University and Widener.  Seniors Cameron Hedquist (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) and Billy DeBoissiere (Columbia, Md./Atholton), junior Thor Petersen (Germantown, Md./Northwest), and sophomore Dylan Cope (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral) guided the Seahawks to an eighth-place finish in the 200 free relay in 1:29.79.
 
The quartet of first-years Zach Lilley (Myersville, Md./Middletown) and Michael Speer (Springfield, Va./West Springfield), sophomore Bobby Witkop (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase), and junior Jimmy Forest (Columbia, Md./Atholton) garnered a 10th-place finish in the relay in 1:30.99.
 
First-year Grant Burgess (Fallston, Md./Fallston) was the top finisher for the Seahawks in the 1650 free in 17:34.22 while sophomore Jackson Holden (Valley Lee, Md./Great Mills) came in 12th in 17:51.07.  Senior Chris Coghill (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) placed 14th in 18:05.74 to add to St. Mary's score.
 
SATURDAY SESSION
The Seahawks finished sixth in the team standings after the next eight events, besting Widener by 57 points.  Petersen led St. Mary's in the 200 breaststroke with a second-place finish in 2:14.02 while junior Ryan Wilson (Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford)  came in 13th in 2:29.51.
 
The foursome of Hedquist, DeBoissiere, Petersen, and Witkop picked up a third-place finish in the 800 freestyle relay in 7:09.49 while Burgess, Speer, Coghill, and Holden combined for a seventh-place finish in 7:34.31.
 
Petersen placed fourth in the 400 individual medley in 4:23.21 while Coghill claimed top honors in the consolation finals with a ninth-place finish in 4:35.05.  Holden took 10th in 4:36.26 while sophomore Chris Carpino (Medfield, Mass./Medfield) finished 12th in 4:58.84.
 
Witkop captured the consolation finals of the 100 butterfly with a ninth-place in 53.95 while Lilley tied for 10th in 55.26.  Burgess added three more points to the team score with a 14th-place finish in 55.99.  Cope came in a tie for 10th in the 50 freestyle in 22.57 while Lilley followed next in 12th in 22.60.  Speer was the top finisher in the 200 freestyle with an 11th-place finish in 1:51.54.
 
SUNDAY SESSION
The Seahawks claimed a third-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:15.53 behind the efforts of Hedquist, DeBoissiere, Petersen, and Cope while the foursome of Speer, Lilley, Witkop, and Forest finished 10th in the same event in 3:23.16.
 
Petersen notched a fourth-place finish in the 200 butterfly in 2:02.64 to be the Seahawks' top finisher in the event.  Cope was fourth as well in the 200 individual medley in 2:02.26 while Forest came in seventh in 2:04.41.
 
Forest captured the consolation finals with a ninth-place finish in 1:03.89 while sophomore Ryan Reis (Darnestown, Md./Quince Orchard) came in 15th in 1:09.26 and Wilson followed in 16th in 1:09.97.  Burgess picked up a 10th-place finish in the 500 freestyle in 5:02.92 while Holden came in 16th in 5:12.15.  Speer placed 11th in the 100 freestyle in 50.03 while Lilley took 14th in 51.31.
 
The Seahawks will now be idle until January 10, 2013 when St. Mary's hosts University of Mary Washington in Capital Athletic Conference action at 4:00 pm.  In the meantime, the Seahawks will head south to Florida for their winter training trip between December 30 and January 8.
