Stevens Institute of Technology Hires Nawrot

Tom Nawrot (East Brunswick, N.J.) has joined the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s and women’s swimming coaching staffs, head coach Brad Thornton (New York, N.Y.) announced on Wednesday afternoon. Nawrot was a 13-time National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) All-American during a standout career at The College of New Jersey and most recently spent time as an assistant coach at Carnegie Melon University.

“I’m excited to add Tom Nawrot to our coaching staff next season,” Thornton said. “Tom’s passion for swimming and high-energy coaching style will not only help with recruiting, but will help create a team atmosphere conducive to fast swimming.”

After graduating from TCNJ in May of 2009, Nawrot joined the Lions’ staff as an assistant for the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons, handling practice planning, recruiting, strength and conditioning, meet management, and aquatic center oversight.

Nawrot moved to Carnegie Melon as an assistant coach and assistant aquatic director for the 2011-12 school year, handling all aspects of the swimming programs and aquatic center. The East Brunswick, N.J. native helped guide five men’s swimmers to All-America finishes at the 2012 NCAA Division III Championships and junior Breanna Stillo was a first-team CoSIDA Academic All-American under his tutelage. Nawrot also supervised the intramural program and certain varsity athletic contests for the Department of Athletics.

“Coming from Carnegie Mellon, Tom understands the type of Student-Athlete we’re recruiting, and we couldn’t be happier that he’s now part of our team,” added Thornton.

In addition to being a 13-time All-American, Nawrot was a World Championship qualifier in the 400-meter medley relay (2009), and an 18-time All-New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) performer. He was named the Collegiate Men’s Swimming Rookie of the Year in 2006 and also earned academic accolades throughout his career.

“I’m excited to join the Stevens family,” Nawrot said. “I look forward to adding to the culture of success that has been established here and feel this is a great opporutunity.”

Nawrot has spent time coaching at South Brunswick High School, University of Texas Longhorns Swim Camp and Nike Swim Camp.
