CSCAA Announces Award Winners

Six luminaries of the college swimming world will be recognized by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America at next month’s convention.  The CSCAA Convention will be held May 17-19 in San Antonio, Texas at the historic St. Anthony's Wyndham Riverwalk hotel.  This year the association will recognize George Kennedy, Ron Ballatore, Jim Steen, Ron Ballatore  and Brent Rutemiller and Michael Stott of Swimming World Magazine.

The Steadman Award
2011-12 Recipient- George Kennedy, Johns Hopkins University
This Steadman Award is presented annually to a swimming or diving coach in high school, club, or university ranks who, in the opinion of the CSCAA, has done the most to spread happiness in Coach Richard Steadman's beloved sport of swimming and diving.

The National Collegiate and Scholastic Swimming Trophy
2011-12 Recipient- Ron Ballatore, UCLA and Univ. of Florida
The National Collegiate and Scholastic Swimming Trophy, is the highest award of its kind in the United States. The Award is permanently housed at the International Swimming Hall of Fame in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. It is presented to an individual or organization for having contributed in an outstanding way to swimming as a competitive sport and as a healthful recreational activity at schools and colleges

Speedo Lifetime Achievement Award
2011-12 Recipient- Jim Steen, Kenyon College
The Speedo CSCAA Lifetime Achievement Award is conferred upon the individual whose efforts best exemplify the integrity and ideals of collegiate swimming and who has achieved significant success in the sport while imparting the educational and character-building qualities of the collegiate swimming experience.

Ben Franklin Award-
2011-12 Recipient- “Swimming World” - Brent Rutemiller, editor and Michael Stott, writer.
The Ben Franklin Award is awarded to the individual, or organization, whose efforts best promote the integrity and enhancement of the student-athlete ideal.

Additionally, the CSCAA announced the inaugural recipients of the Jean Freeman Memorial Assistant Coach Scholarship to attend the CSCAA Convention.  The recipients are:
  • Division I Men- Jesse Moore, College of William and Mary
  • Division I Women- Katie Robinson, Rutgers
  • Division II Men- Shane Pelton, University of Bridgeport
  • Division II Women- Stephanie Palmeri, Long Island University-CW Post Campus
  • Division III Men- Christopher Sullivan, Colorado College
  • Division III Women- Karin Brown, Amherst College
The recipients completed an application and the recommended recipients' names were forwarded to the CSCAA Executive Board from THE SUMMIT (The Summit for Empowering Women in Swimming) of which Jean was a founding member.
