Wisconsin-Milwaukee Sweeps Wheaton

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's swimming team soundly defeated Wheaton College Friday evening and improved their record to 5-0 overall, winning all 11 events in rolling to a 125-79 win at the Chrouser Natatorium in Wheaton, Ill.

In addition to both relay teams, Milwaukee got first-place finishes from seniors Evan Green, Nathan Rahe and Kyle Trelka, juniors Nathan Welchlin, Sam Niesen and David Dvorak sophomores Sean Kimmitt and Josh Kinney, and freshman Ryan Finke.

"Today was a real confidence builder," UWM head coach Kyle Clements said. "Any time you get in the pool and swim fast, it builds up some confidence. But, what we were looking for today was to really round some things out. We're trying to figure out those second and third events that the kids might be able to swim at conference and that's what we got to play with today and we saw a lot of bright spots."

Welchlin kicked things off by taking first in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 9:41.90 in just the first time he's swam the event all season. Classmate Mike Brady came in second at 10:03.54.

UWM finished 1-2-3 in the 200 freestyle with Green taking first (1:44.32), freshman Kenny Stelpflug second (1:45.40) and Trelka third (1:46.02).

Niesen outpaced the field in the 50 freestyle with an impressive time of 21.57 while classmate Dvorak grabbed the top spot in the 100 freestyle at 47.62.

Rahe won the 400 IM at 4:14.76, nearly 10 seconds in front of the second-place finisher.

Kimmitt picked up his first win of the year in the 100 butterfly with a season-best time of 51.96 while fellow sophomore Kinney won the 200 breaststroke in 1:00.97.

Trelka continues to impress as he took the top spot in the 100 backstroke (54.30) while Finke took first in the 500 freestyle (4:47.66) by nearly 30 seconds.

The Panthers are right back at it tomorrow, with a dual meet at host UIC.
