Division III Week in Review

This weekend, several exciting winter invites happened, with many great swimmers putting up some fast times. With Thanksgiving break fast approaching this week, many teams are trying to get some fast swimming in before Turkey Day.

Carnegie Mellon, Rochester, Washington and Lee, and Allegheny swam at a quad meet this weekend. CMU took both sides of the meet. The CMU women started off strong with a 1:51.02 in the 200 medley relay, with Rochester coming in second with a 1:52.88. Emily Friedline of Rochester won the 1000 free with a 10:47.75. Megan Garvey of CMU won the 200 fly with a 2:11.65. Ariana Lyons of Allegheny won the 50 free with a 24.92. Debra Lin of CMU won the 200 back with a 2:10.55. Price Kinney won her 200 breast with a 2:30.43. Chong Xu won the women’s 500 free with a 5:15.40. Jocelyn Cassada of W&L won the 100 back with a 1:00.19. On the men’s side, W&L started off with a win in the 200 medley relay, going 1:36.32. In a close race, Brandon Yee of CMU, Brian Stirling of W&L, and Jonathon Lin of CMU were all within a second of each other in the 200 free. Yee won with a 1:45.32, Stirling came in second with a 1:45.41, and Lin came in second with a 1:45.78. Yee later won the 500 free with a 4:42.56. Mirno Pasquali of Allegheny won the 100 back with a 52.62, and the 200 back with a 1:54.50. Brian Wong of Rochester won the 200 fly with a 1:54.89. Richard Sykes of W&L won the 50 free with a 21.01. In one of the numerous close races in this meet, Austin Bohn of CMU won the 100 breast going a 1:00.00, with David Ireland of W&L going a 1:00.07, and Cole Um of CMU going 1:00.84. Ireland went on to win the 200 breast with a 2:11.00. In the another close race, Brandon Intrieri won the 100 free with a 47.58, followed closely by Brian Stirling of W&L who swam a 47.61, and Richard Sykes of W&L swam a 47.84. Brandon Intrieri of Allegheny won the 100 fly with an impressive 50.36. Impressive times from both sides of the meet.

This weekend, several exciting winter invitational meets happened. An exciting one was the Woehnker Invite. The competing teams included Asbury College, Carthage, DePauw, University of Indianapolis (Division II), Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Saint Mary’s College (Indiana), Wabash, and Wheaton. Some exciting times include Casey Hooker of DePauw’s 16:07.77 in the 1650 free. Hooker later won the 200 free with a 1:42.50, and placed second in the 100 fly with a 50.94. Ryan Ortmann of Carthage won the 50 free with a 21.88. Lauren Jurgens and Carlie Herich of Wheaton got first and second respectively in the 200 free, with Jurgens going 1:58.12 and Herich going 1:58.83. Jurgens later won the 500 free with a 5:12.35. Taryn Albright of Asbury won the women’s 100 back with a 1:02.03, and Wheaton’s Moire Yue came in second with a 1:02.12. Later though, Yue came back and won the 100 fly, going 1:00.11, and Albright came in second with a 1:00.31. Catherine Baker of DePauw won the 100 breast with a 1:08.56, and later won the 200 breast with a 2:25.82, and the 200 IM with a 2:13.70. Wheaton’s Jamie Walitsch and Laura Westfall got first and second respectively in the women’s 200 fly, with Walitsch going 2:16.82 and Westfall going 2:18.42. John Montgomery won the men’s 100 free with a 47.91, and his teammate Alexander Alfonso was right behind him with a 47.97. Kelly Loftus of Carthage won the women’s 200 back with a 2:11.21, and her teammate Kyle Drake won the men’s 200 back with a 1:54.60. Daniel Bowman of Asbury won the 500 free for the men, going 4:44.40. Carthage’s Kyle Drake came in second with a 4:45.65. Overall, an impressive meet for all teams. Division II team, Indianapolis won the meet overall, but our Division III teams gave them a good fight.

Wheaton also had a meet against Keene State and Springfield this weekend. The Keene women started off the meet well, with Lianna Wissman, Jill Whitaker, Maureen O’Leary, and Taylor Dasilva winning the 200 medley relay with a 1:51.95. The Keene men followed that up with a win in their 200 medley relay, with Randy Dunton, Tyler Tambascio, Daniel Oliveira, and James Black going 1:39.74. Keene’s Jared Hyde won the men’s 200 free with a 1:46.42, just barely out-touching Springfield’s Nolan Manley who swam a 1:46.49. Jill Whitaker of Keene won the women’s 100 breast with a 1:07.99. Drew Ledwith of Keene went a 1:56.11 in his 200 fly, winning by seven seconds. Kellie Pennington of Springfield won the women’s 50 free with a 23.98. Drew Ledwith of Keene won the men’s 200 back with a 1:56.92, with Kelly Dullard of Springfield coming in second with a 2:03.29, and Wheaton’s Richard Jenkins coming in third with a 2:03.41. Ledwith also won the 500 free with an incredible 4:35.52. Keene State won the meet on both sides.

Emory had a dual meet with Georgia University, and while Georgia took both sides of the meet, Emory showed them why they’re one of the top Division III schools out there. Andrew Dillinger of Emory went a 1:44.92 in his 200 free. Anna Dobben of Emory won the 50 free with a 23.76, and Ryan Bass of Emory won the men’s 50 free with a 21.08. Sadie Nenning went a 2:09.99 in her 200 IM. Peter O’Brien and Jake Stephens of Emory went second and third respectively in the men’s 200 IM, with O’Brien going 1:54.87, and Stephens going 1:56.08. O’Brien later went a 2:05.13 in his 200 breast. Emory’s Anne Culpepper went a 5:06.32 in her 500 free. Jen Aronoff went a 2:27.53 in her 200 breast.

At the Northwest Invitational Meet, Whitworth, Pacific Lutheran, Pacific University, Whitman, Linfield, Willamette, and College of Idaho competed. Whitworth won both sides of the meet, with the women gaining a total of 687.5 points, and the men gaining 846.5 points. Pacific Lutheran came in second on both sides, with the women getting 607 points, and the men getting 614 points. Whitman took third, with the women getting 496 points, and the men getting 539.5 points. For the women, Whitworth started out strong, with Jennifer Benson, Nicole Lecoq, Anna Case, and Alisa Stang going 1:41.40 in the finals of the 200 free relay. The Whitworth men’s 200 free relay, consisting of Aaron Vaccaro, Andrew Sumnicht, Nathan Ranno, and Rory Buck went a 1:28.30. Amanda Clark of Pacific won the 500 free with a 5:14.88. Galen Sollom-Brotherton of Whitman won the men’s 500 free with a 4:41.93. Samantha Smith of Whitworth won the women’s 200 IM with a 2:14.40, and Allison Clark of Pacific came in second with a 2:14.54. Wesley Walton of Whitworth won the men’s 200 IM with a 2:00.58. Pacific’s Katherine Porter won the 50 free with a 24.78. Aaron Vaccar of Whitworth won on the men’s side with a 21.74. The Whitworth women finished off day one with a 4:04.04 in the 400 medley relay, swum by Katherine Duvall, Melissa Barringer, Samantha Smith, and Alisa Stang. The Whitworth men’s relay consisting of Wesley Walton, Rory Buck, Aaron Vaccaro, and Andrew Sumnicht won with a 3:31.62. On day two, Allison Clark of Pacific won the 400 IM with a 4:45.40. Toni Castillo of PLU won the women’s 100 fly with a 59.64, and on the men’s side Aaron Vaccaro of Whitworth won with a 50.30. Vaccaro later won the 100 back with a 53.64. Amanda Clark of Pacific won the women’s 200 free with a 1:58.04, and Chase Mesford of PLU won the men’s 200 free with a 1:48.75. In the women’s 100 breast, Genay Pilarowski of Whitman won with a 1:10.04, Melissa Barringer of Whitworth came in second with a 1:10.35, and Samantha Smith of Whitworth came in third with a 1:10.54. Close race! Whitworth’s Rory Buck, winner at NCAA’s last year, went a 56.21 in his 100 breast. The Whitman men finished day two with Karl Mering, Chris Bendix, Matt Rowett, and Galen Sollom-Brotherton going 7:13.70 in the 800 free relay. Later on day three, Sollom-Brotherton won the 1650 free with a 16:33.20. Katherine Duvall of Whitworth won the 200 back with a 2:13.23, and Darla Avis of PLU came in second with a 2:17.82. Wesley Walton of Whitworth won the men’s 200 back with a 1:57.36. Jennifer Benson and Alisa Stang of Whitworth went first and second in the 100 free, with Benson going 54.16 and Stang going 54.53. Karl Mering and Mitchell Lee of Whitman took first and second in the men’s 100 free, with Mering going 48.93, and Lee coming in just behind him with a 48.96. Genay Pilarowski of Whitman just barely out-touched Pacific’s Allison Clark in the 200 breast, with Pilarowski going 2:31.33 and Clark going 2:31.70. Rory Buck continued to dominate the breaststroke, taking first in the 200 with a 2:03.80, thirteen seconds ahead of second place Paul Chang of Whitman. Katie Chapman of Whitman won the 200 fly with a 2:13.57, and Natalie Groat of LIN came in second with a 2:20.77. For the men, Kramer Ichimura of Pacific went a 2:01.39, just a short 0.5 seconds ahead of PLU’s Jacob Deines, who went a 2:01.89. The Whitworth women finished the meet well, with Jennifer Benson, Anna Case, Nicole Lecoq, and Alisa Stang going 3:40.91 in the 400 free relay. For the men, Whitman took first in the 400 free relay, with Karl Mering, Mitchell Lee, Shunei Asao, and Galen Sollom-Brotherton going 3:12.05.

MIT faced off agains Bowdoin and Babson at the Bowdoin pool this weekend. The MIT women, Christy Rogers, Calley Murphy, Anna Kokensparger, and Elina Hu won the 400 medley relay with a 4:02.30. The MIT men won the 400 medley relay with Ryan Terbush, Michael Liao, Wyatt Ubellacker, and Colby Dunn going 3:26.75. Alexandra Hall of MIT won the women’s 1000 free with a 10:54.63. Kokensparger won the 200 free with a 1:55.14, and for the men, Ben Bauchwitz of MIT won with a 1:44.41. Eann Tuan from MIT won the women’s 100 back with a 59.36, and her teammate Ryan Terbush won for the men with a 53.81. Freshman Helen Newton of Bowdoin won the women’s 100 breast with a 1:09.95. Michael Liao of MIT won the men’s 100 breast with a 57.59, and later won the 200 breast with a 2:07.89. Jeffrey Lin of MIT won the men’s 200 fly with a 1:56.51, and Chris Granata of Bowdoin came in second with a 1:57.30. In the women’s 50 free, Amy Jacobi of MIT won with a 25.63, and Patty Boyer of Bowdoin came in second with a 25.64. Close race! Wyatt Ubellacker of MIT won the men’s 50 free with a 20.88. In the men’s 100 free, Colby Dunn of MIT won with a 46.33, and Nathan Mecray of Bowdoin came in second with a 46.81. In another close race, MIT’s Katelyn Rossick just barely out-touched her teammate Jane He in the 200 back, with Rossick going 2:11.33 and He going 2:11.38. Brendan Liu of MIT won the men’s 200 back with a 1:55.99. Freshman from Bowdoin, Helen Newton, continues to shine, winning the 200 breast with a 2:29.92. Anna Kokensparger of MIT won the 100 fly with a 58.13, and for the men, her teammate Wyatt Ubellacker won the men’s 100 fly with an astounding 49.99. Katelyn Rossick MIT went a 2:12.75 in her 200 IM, followed by Allen Garner of Bowdoin going 2:14.16. Brendan Deveney of MIT won the men’s 200 IM with a 1:57.52. Concluding the meet, the MIT men, Wyatt Ubellacker, Tony Chen, Brendan Chiu, and Colby Dunn went a 3:09.89 in the 400 free relay.

In Pennsylvania, York College faced off against Washington and Jefferson. The W&J women won the meet , 157 to 97, and the York men won 132-130. W&J started off the meet with a 1:51.68 in their 200 medley relay consisting of Charlotte Lima, CJ Corcoran, Zoe Levenson, and Jessica Sweitzer. The York men won the 200 medley relay with Bryant Hughes, Jamie Hicks, Andy Woods, and Rich Janosky going 1:43.74. Jonathan Weeks of W&J won the men’s 100 fly with a 55.51. Jessica Sweitzer of W&J won the women’s 50 free with a 25.39, and she later won the 100 free with a 54.31. Cody Latchford of York won the men’s 100 free with a 50.02. Charlotte Lima of W&J won the 100 back with a 1:01.45. Jamie Hicks of York won the men’s 100 breast with a 1:04.29. Brittany Vogel of W&J won the 400 IM with a 4:45.85.

Amherst faced off against Colby this weekend. Amherst won both sides of the meet, with the women winning 173 to 93, and the men winning 179 to 94. Stephanie Ternullo of Amherst won the 200 free with a 1:57.25. Ryan Lichtenfels of Amherst won for them, going 1:45.10. Sabrina Lee of Amherst won the 100 back with a 59.57. Bart Federak of Amherst won the 100 breast with a 1:01.96. Nicole Heise of Amherst won the 200 fly with a 2:13.00. Katie Vincett of Amherst won the women’s 50 free with a 25.09. Connor Sholtis of Amherst won the men’s 100 free with a 49.43. Becca Thompson of Amherst won the 200 back with a 1:12.60, and her teammate Connor Deveny won on the men’s side with a 1:55.11. Tyler Bulakul of Amherst won the men’s 100 fly with a 52.84. Amherst finished the meet off with their 200 free relay (Ashleigh Stoddart, Stephanie Ternullo, Lulu Belak, and Katie Vincett) going 1:41.25. Colby’s Charlotte Veazie, Sarah Hansen, Laura Burns, and Mandy Ferguson went a 1:46.32 in their 200 free relay.

At the Ohio Wesleyan Invitational, Ohio Wesleyan hosted Albion, Wilmington OH, Urbana, and Lake Erie. Some of the top times include Ivan Cizmar of Lake Erie’s 4:45.37 in his 500 free, and he later won the 100 back with a 51.93. Melissa Ward of Ohio Wesleyan went a 1:00.27 in her 100 fly. Kim Helander of Urbana went a quick 50.74 in his 100 fly. Matthew Mahoney of Ohio Wesleyan won the men’s 100 breast with a 1:00.76. Laura Steavenson of Albion won the women’s 200 free with a 1:59.77. Julian Milinkovskyi of Lake Erie won the men’s 200 free with a 1:43.15, and later went an incredible time of 1:51.78 in the 200 IM. The Albion women won the 400 free relay with a 3:51.20. Lauren Menicucci of Lake Erie won the women’s 200 IM with a 2:13.94. In a close race, Hollis Williams won the women’s 200 fly with a 2:15.08, and Cassandra Wendell of Lake Erie came in second with a 2:15.12. The women’s 200 back was a close race as well, with Anne McComas of Ohio Wesleyan winning with a time of 2:19.20, and Victoria Burcham coming in second with a 2:19.27. Ivan Cizmar of Lake Erie continues his streak of amazing times with a 1:47.63 in his 200 back, winning by over eleven seconds. Incredible. His teammate Julian Milinkovskyi also continues his winning streak, going 2:04.11 in the 200 breast, and later on went a 4:01.68 in the 400 IM. Some incredible times from these boys. The Ohio Wesleyan women won the 400 medley relay with a 4:15.61, and the Lake Erie men won with a 3:32.59. Allison Wilburn of Albion won the women’s 50 free with a 26.13, and Kim Helander of Urbana won on the men’s side with a 21.82. Finishing up the meet, the Ohio Wesleyan women just barely beat out Albion in the 200 free relay, going 1:47.10 and 1:47.41 respectively. The Urbana men won the 200 free relay on the men’s side, going 1:27.84.

Middlebury faced off against Tufts and Connecticut College this weekend. The Middlebury women won 172-121 against Conn., and won 152-148 against Tufts. On the men’s side, the Jumbos won 166-128 against the Panthers, while the Camels were 181-107 victory. The Middlebury women won the 200 medley relay with Andie Tibbetts, Jamie Hillas, Maddy Berkman, and Nora Daly going 1:50.49. The Conn men won the 200 medley relay with Tim Walsh, Kirk Czelewicz, Sean Paquette, and Cam Johnson going 1:37.43. Andrea Tibbetts of Middlebury won the 100 back with a 59.43. Jamie Hillas of Middlebury won the 100 breast with a 1:06.94, and the 200 breast with a 2:29.06. Esther Mehasz of Conn won the 1000 free with a 10:43.81, and won the 500 free with a 5:14.17. Max Fabian of Conn won the 200 free, going 1:48.19, just 0.1 seconds ahead of Ethan Litman of Middlebury who went 1:48.29. Tim Walsh of Conn won the 100 back with a 52.52. Ellie Huelbig of Conn went 2:12.97 in her 200 fly. Sam Gill of Conn went 48.03 in his 100 free, closely followed by John Devine of Tufts who went 48.59. Gill later won the 100 fly with a 52.39. Drew Berman of Tufts went 2:15.94 in his 200 breast. Max Fabian of Conn won the 500 free with a 4:47.87. Mia Greenwald of Tufts won her 100 fly with a 59.97. The Tufts women finished up the meet with a win in the 200 free relay, with Courtney Adams, Sam Sliwinski, Scarlett Hao, and Kathryn Coniglio going 1:40.50. The Tufts men also won the 200 free relay with Will Parker, EJ Testa, John Devine, and Owen Rood going 1:26.88.

Some other great times from this weekend include Anna Macedonia of Marymount University’s 58.06 in her 100 back, and she also went 53.62 in her 100 free. Vladislave Paskas of Bridgeport University went 4:41.77 in his 500 free at the Kings Point Invite this weekend, and he went 47.64 in his 100 free later that meet. In that same meet, Kevin Lindgren of U.S. Merchant Marine Academy went 53.24 in the 100 back, Iikka Hanhineva of Bridgeport went 1:52.77 in his 200 fly, he went 50.96 in his 100 fly, and Maria Trubitsyna of Bridgeport went 2:14.69 in her 200 fly. At the Centre vs. Rhodes meet, Eric Thompson of Centre went 1:59.64 in his 200 fly, and Kelsey Wilson of Rhodes went 56.85 in her 100 free. In the Bates vs. Wesleyan meet, Gabrielle Sergi of Bates went 55.03 in her 100 free, and the Bates men went 7:24.13 in the 800 free relay.

With winter Invitational meets well underway, we are all expecting some more fast times to come soon enough. Even with Thanksgiving break this week, I am sure most coaches will be encouraging their swimmers to continue training, swimming and working some of that turkey and stuffing off. So to all you dedicated swimmers out there, keep up the good work this break!
